Owner description: Hudson River School painter Frederic E. Church designed Olana, his family home, studio, and estate, as an integrated environment embracing architecture, art, and landscape. Olana, a National Historic Landmark, is an icon of naturalistic landscape design, with five miles of carriage roads and a Persian-inspired house at its summit, embracing unrivaled panoramic views of the vast Hudson River Valley. Today, visitors can experience an array of activities, from meandering through the 250 acre artist designed landscape, to taking a tour of the house and surrounding landscape, to viewing the changing exhibitions both in the main house and a gallery devoted to contemporary photography. They can see a 17 minute award-winning video on the property and a permanent orientation exhibit. They can also participate in a variety of educational programs in the Wagon House Education Center, including a free backpack program that includes a variety of projects for children.

Not fat from the NY Thruway.Good place to stop if you want to break up your trip. Interesting house modeled after Moorish architecture. The outside of the house is very distinctive. The inside not so much. Art lovers will love all the art inside the house. Nice grounds and carriage trails.Call or email ahead for reservations.

Olana has become an important site for art history even though most of the paintings in the home are not top quality. It is crucial to understand this is a working artist's home preserved as it was in Victorian times. Church's taste in decor and landscape is great fun and well worth a visit.

We have been visiting Olana for nearly 30 years and have watched it "grow" as more and more of the Church's personal residence has been opened up for tours and the grounds have been gradually returned to their original splendor. In the year since our last tour they have made remarkable progress including a tune up of the docents

Even if you do not know who Frederic Church was, or you have never seen any of his paintings, you should see Olana. The story of the house, its architecture, the creation of the landscape, the near-fatal sale, the just-in-time saving of Olana....it all makes a great story. I recommend you book a house tour in advance either on line or by phone. (You can see the grounds on your own.) Our guide seemed to know everything about Church and this house. This is really worth a visit. Note: there is really no food on site, so eat before you go, or bring a picnic.
