A simply magical experience. The food, wine, service and was spectacular! The rangers are intent on finding you the big 5. we found them several times in a small area. I simply could not believe the amount of game in one small area and how diverse the topography was. Dinner in the Boma is the best with great food. If you go say hi to mt two favorite rangers Jaques and Gary. Oh and Trevor is the best bartender in the world. Ask for a drink and he will say Ok boss and with a wink double time meaning quick and a double. This was phenomenal!

Room Tip: if with family stay at the main lodge but if a couple you MUST stay at Rattrays

Hoped this would be a special trip and it exceeded every expectation! Within the first twelve hours we had seen lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes, wild dogs and so much more. Our fabulous guide helped us view and identify over sixty birds and thirty eight mammals.Jacques was knowledgeable patient and witty. Enjoyed our meals, the staff (Trevor the exceptional bartender/gentlemen) wine and dancing. Our accommodations were luxurious; especially liked the his and her own private bathrooms. I would return in a heartbeat!

The resort has few "rooms" so it's nice and intimate . When we went we occupied 3 of those rooms .

The room is actually a huge house with big his and hers bathrooms , a living room area and an outdoor tub.

It was our first time to go on safari when we stayed at the resort . The guide was most courteous and knowledgeable .

The food was delicious and the selection varying .

The resort was very clean and boasted of authentic African decor of horns and hides.

One drawback was that there was no early morning breakfast . So when we went on an early morning drive , we were hungry and had to wait later in the morning to look for a place in the reserve to have some packed breakfast .

Dear Nikkida,

We are pleased to know that you had a “perfect” first safari experience with us. Thank you for your valuable feedback.
During the summer months at MalaMala, we have recommended itineraries for our guests. While an itinerary is suggested to take advantage of the more comfortable temperature ranges and the enhanced game viewing opportunities, they are not set in stone. Guests are encouraged to discuss their preferences with their ranger, and all possible will be done to accommodate them.
Our summer schedule offers a quick bite to eat before game drives, unless you have arranged to meet at the vehicle to head straight out on your adventure. Some guests prefer returning to camp for a big breakfast after drive, whilst other opt to stay in the bush with a packed breakfast. We offer the flexibility of choice.
During winter months we serve a hot breakfast before game drive, as the pleasant temperatures allows for more extensive game drives, unlike during the summer, where the hot summer sun ushers our guests to the cool environment of their luxury, air conditioned khayas.
At Rattray’s on MalaMala we pride ourselves in delivering on all of our guests’ special, and individual requirements and expectations. We hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Most amazing lodge in Kruger. Accommodations are terrific. Service was fabulous. Everyone is so friendly and couldn't do enough to make sure our experience was a fabulous one.
Daniel is a wonderful guide and made sure that we saw every possible animal. He tracked down herds of animals for us to view. This lodge won't disappoint!

The rooms and restaurant all lovely, bartender is amazing and remembers everyone and everything.. Beautiful setting in the Mala Mala private game reserve which is next to Kruger National Park.
However, the guides have an agenda - looking for lions, leopards, cheetah's and if you want to see smaller animals or birds they will very reluctantly participate. They don't ask, just go where the big game has been reported, if you want to see cats, elephants, hippos and this is your first time on safari, it would be great.
Guides are also allowed to take photos, and they have very expensive camera equipment, thus their attention is often diverted by this personal activity.
Also the guides eat 3 meals a day with you, kind of tiring.
Overall out of my 15 Safari lodges in Tanzania, Botswana and now S. Africa (over 3 separate trips) I would rate this a 3.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a view of the river

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
