The rooms and restaurant all lovely, bartender is amazing and remembers everyone and everything.. Beautiful setting in the Mala Mala private game reserve which is next to Kruger National Park.
However, the guides have an agenda - looking for lions, leopards, cheetah's and if you want to see smaller animals or birds they will very reluctantly participate. They don't ask, just go where the big game has been reported, if you want to see cats, elephants, hippos and this is your first time on safari, it would be great.
Guides are also allowed to take photos, and they have very expensive camera equipment, thus their attention is often diverted by this personal activity.
Also the guides eat 3 meals a day with you, kind of tiring.
Overall out of my 15 Safari lodges in Tanzania, Botswana and now S. Africa (over 3 separate trips) I would rate this a 3.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a view of the river

From the moment we arrived at Skukuza airport to the moment we were driven away from Rattray's at Mala Mall, things could not have been more perfect. Food and drink service was impeccable and very well presented. Our game drives exceeded expectation, and it was especially interesting to drink wine at sunset while observing a newly found nest of hyenas.Ranger Daniel was especially informative and found the Big 5 and so much more. Our accommodation was gorgeous and so very well thought out. A small interior and exterior dining space, 2 HUGE bathrooms, outdoor plunge pool and river views. My husband is very particular and he was completely enthralled with the entire experience. We've been home a week now, and nearly 2 weeks from our exciting time at Rattrays. We keep telling ourselves how lucky we were to have enjoyed this special place, and how much we miss it. Truly magical. Alex and his staff really go beyond "the norm" and will provide you with a wonderful life awareness experience.

Room Tip: All 8 rooms face the river. All are very private.

How to describe. Three nights at the wonderful Rattray's. Two full days and two half days with Joe the Ranger. A perfect few days. Our suite / villa / lodge - difficult to know what to call an 8 room home - a huge bedroom and living room with a view out over the river, a his and hers suite of rooms (a shower/bathroom, a toilet/sink room and a dressing room EACH. The food was excellent and the wine flowed freely. The staff from the managemet down were wonderful, kind, informed and absolutely charming. You were met by at least one of the senior management team everytime you came back from a drive - a really nice touch. Joe, out Ranger, was an absolute legend - we saw everything several times including lions, lionesses, leopards plus many many more. We had an extraordinary experience watching bullfrogs fighting and mating (see pictures) and Joe lying in a puddle to photograph them. This was the perfect time for us!!! Thank you everyone at Rattray's for making our stay so unforgettable

Room Tip: All of the rooms overlook the river

the staff at Rattray's are fantastic! The ranger guides are very competent, informative, enthusiastic and dedicated to making our visit incomparably exciting for viewing the wildlife and all the beauty of the region. The rooms are very comfortable and well thought out, the dining room and the informality of the lodge are genuinely geared to the maximum care of the guests. We had a wonderful experience at Rattray's and we highly recommend the facility. I am ready to return as soon as possible. Simply the greatest way to enjoy being on Safari.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
