Description: There is nothing like a familiar welcome to create an atmosphere of warmth, a sense of coming home and of good things prepared with love. The Lust Bistro & Bakery enfolds you with that feeling of belonging that fills up your senses with satisfaction. Cradled in the folds of the peaceful Vrede en Lust wine estate in Franschhoek, the Lust Bistro & Bakery entices one's surroundings with the tantalising aromas of freshly baked artisan bread - imaginative creations of Jean Pierre Smith, patron chef and baker extraordinaire whose lunchtime chalkboard presents a constantly intriguing invitation of discovery. From breakfast to late lunch, there is something for everyone: salads crisp with dew-fresh seasonal garden produce, cakes just out the oven, cheese and charcuterie platters boasting South African specialities, mouthwatering chicken and beef dishes all exquisitely presented. The Lust Bistro & Bakery is definitely an experience you do not want to miss.

This place is part of the Vrede En Lust vineyard and is a great place to have breakfast before you start a hard day of wine tasting. Recommend you try the eggs benedict or one of the omelettes which are both excellent. Added bonus is that they come with a side order of toast from bread that is made in the onsite bakery. Good tea and coffee too. Well worth a visit.

Most inattentive service experience to date - haphazard and unorganised. You will need lots of patience

Dear Mark,
I am sorry that you received anything less than stellar service. It would greatly help me if you would take a couple of minutes to send me an email (jp@lustbistro.com) with some more information. Please accept my apologies and I hope to hear from you soon so that I can have a look at any problem areas. Warm regards. JeanPierre

For the last three years a group of friends - 14 - have celebrated their birthdays every quarter at this restaurant and never had a bad experience. Sadly today the food was good but the service was very bad. The waitress was very inexperienced or poorly trained and in spite of requests to the supervisor it did not improve.
No blackboard with the specials - we were unable to understand the waitress' explanation we eventually requested a written list - no coffee or dessert orders were taken until it was requested and on service the three birthday dessert plates were forgotten in spite of a reminder phone call yesterday and a mention on arrival. when the owner eventually appeared on a specific request by me no apology was given instead I was accused of "shouting" at him and poking him in the chest! I am a 75 year old lady! the apology was only forthcoming when I pointed out to him that his handling of the situation was sadly lacking and I was not surprised by the service we had received.

Dear SandraMaartens,

It saddens me that I have to respond to a review like this, however context is necessary for any reader. Additionally it might provide you with some perspective once you've taken a break from poking complete strangers in the chest...:-) (Incidentally - you'll have a very receptive audience once you cease this)
1. Your table of 14 guests enjoyed the attention of 2 waitresses, both local hands and accent - however I've never had a complaint before that it is difficult to understand them.
2. The 3 x dessert birthday plates were being prepared in the kitchen - as they are carefully piped with chocolate. Let's not change the complaint for the sake of a review. You stated that you were annoyed that these complimentary celebration plates did not arrive simultaneously with the coffees. Apologies for not having these ready to go with your coffees. We celebrate quite a few birthdays at the restaurant (not all of them booked in advance) and sometimes have to prepare the plates mid-service.
3. The new chalkboard specials are currently being painted on the blackboards by a chalkboard artist. The entire a-la-carte menu is available in printed menu card format for your ease.
I hope that you have had a moment to read through the above.
Best wishes
JeanPierre

We visited Lust for lunch whilst on the Franschhoek wine tram. Unfortunately the food took a little longer than expected to arrive and we had to rush our lunch to make the tram.

The build your own sandwich concept was fun and the sandwiches were very tasty. I really loved the Gin Float, extremely refreshing after a day of wine tasting in the hot weather.

We sat outside and it was a lovely setting :)

Used the Bistro a couple of times whilst staying next door for a wedding over a weekend. The quality was excellent and all of the party felt the same. Will definitely be back.
