We visited here recently, mainly because of my Wife's obsession with Jon Bon Jovi!
What we weren't expecting was the quality of the food, the warmth of the welcome and just how good the overall feel of the place was.
If you haven't heard about this place, it's a philanthropic project set up by Jon & Dorothea Bon Jovi to give something back to the local community.
The premise is simple, you pay $20 &, in return, you get a well cooked, 3-course meal, with drinks (water or iced tea).
You don't tip at this place, all of the staff are volunteers, but what you can do is "Pay It Forward" and make a donation to enable the restaurant to provide a meal for someone oh needs it.
If you're not in a position to pay, you can volunteer for an hour and get your meal for free.
The menu's not extensive, I think we had a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains & a dessert, but there were good choices & we enjoyed every one immensely. The food was well cooked, well presented &, most importantly, very tasty.

To conclude, this place is awesome! The whole premise of providing something for those less fortunate than yourself, while enjoying a damn good meal, is to be applauded. The staff are beyond compare, you really get the feeling that they enjoy what they do & they were all very friendly & professional.

One thing I must mention is that you shouldn't expect this place to be a "Hard Rock" style shrine to Jon Bon Jovi.
This is not your usual "I'm a Celebrity, aren't I amazing for doing this?!" type of enterprise, in fact, you'd be hard pressed to even know that he was involved, at all.
What this is, is a place where someone who's able to do it, has decided that they're going to give something back & do it in an under-stated way that deserves a round of applause....Well done to everyone involved!

JBJ's Soul Kitchen is housed in a renovated, large garage. The hours of operation are limited. It recently opened a second location in Toms River which has a few more hours. We visited the original Red Bank setting. It presents a combination of a restaurant and a community revitalization project. You can pay the standard prix-fixe of $20.00 for a three-course meal of soup or salad, main course, and dessert. Or you can work for your dinner.
The menu is limited to 4 or 5 entrees. We had a salmon dish and a beef dish. The salmon was particularly good, an ample slice, tender and moist. The beef was a bit overcooked.
The food overall was inventive but less than 5 stars. The concept is a terrific idea.
Go and be inspired.

We were staying in NYC and caught the train to Red Bank, it's a lovely area, on the water, with nice little shops to explore. Soul Kitchen is an easy walk from the train station.
We came for Sunday brunch, there are no reservations- it's first come, first served and it is a small place with limited seating so be prepared that you may have to wait a while to be seated. That was fine for us, we enjoyed looking around the gardens at the front, where they grow some of their own produce.
I love the concept of this place! Anyone can dine here. If you can afford to pay for your meal, a $20 donation is recommended, and that covers your 3 course meal and water/ iced tea/ coffee. The food is great quality so it's excellent value! You can also choose to pay extra if you would like to cover the cost of a meal for someone else in need.
Those who can't afford to pay for their meal are able to volunteer their time in exchange for meals for themselves and their family.
Everyone here is treated with respect and dignity. There is no obvious distinction between those who are paying or not, or those who are volunteering because they want to or because they need to.
It would be great if there were more places like this around!
