“Best Pork Chop of my Life”

Big Daddy’s Soul Food
Ranked #1 of 1 Restaurants in Tchula

My partner and I were tired of driving along the interstate between New Orleans and Memphis so we found another route and drove through the much more picturesque backroads.

We stopped for gas and could smell the food at Big Daddy’s and decided to drop in.

Well. I’m never going to need to eat another pork chop as long as I live because there’s just no way I’d find a better one. The accompanying vegetables, cake and sweet tea were delicious as well and we used the cornbread to soak up the rest of the gravy.

We’ve been traveling around the USA for 2 weeks and this was the best meal we’ve had. And it was only $8. Well worth stopping for.

Big Daddy's is a small family run place, with some of the best home cooking we have ever eaten. I had the neck bones (slow cooked pork, that is juicy and delicious) with greens and lima beans, and tasted the cooked cabbage and okra sides. All were amazing, but the okra was the standout. Lunch came with a "pancake" of cornbread, and a large sweet iced tea. For dessert, the candied sweet potatoes were a treat. The price for this big lunch was under ten dollars.

Barbara, the owner, served us with warm southern hospitality. Big Daddy, her husband, who specializes in the desserts, was not around, but her best friend, who also cooks, joined in the friendly conversation after our lunch.

We came upon Big Daddy's by chance, after heading south on the Blues Highway to Clarksdale, and then southeast on Rt 49E on our way to New Orleans. Tchula sits at the crossroad of 49E and Rt 12, the fastest way to Interstate 55. Next time we are on the road between Memphis and NOLA, we will definitely return to Big Daddy's Soul Food!

We were driving from Memphis to NOLA taking the scenic highway 49E when we stopped in on Big Daddy's. We weren't even hungry, but for two northerners who love food, we had to stop and try it. We were met with true southern hospitality. The owner Barbara and her best friend were busy cooking and serving "Tuesdays Menu". It was fantastic! The menu changes daily. We ate the best fried chicken and sides we have ever had, and we had just driven from family in Memphis and Montgomery eating everywhere that looked good! To top it off Barbara included the most delicious candied yams that for dessert and a perfectly lightly sweetened large ice tea. This was packed to go, but we were welcome to eat at the counters. The price for two huge lunches was under $20! Last night we ate in a fancy, highly rated restaurant in New Orleans, yet all we can do is talk about lunch yesterday and the most charming, friendly and welcoming restaurant we have ever stopped at. We will be taking route 49 E whenever we are south from Memphis.
