If you can, go to Canal Park and walk on the Lakeside Path to the base of the bridge. It goes up and down about every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour.
It’s really neat to watch the bridge as well as the boats that go underneath.

Fun to watch the Aerial Lift Bridge raise and lower on the hour and half-hour. First saw the bridge on foot then went under it on the Vista Star sightseeing cruise. Not super exciting to watch but kind of unique.

Arriving in Downtown Duluth and the Waterfront District we found Parking ($5) in public lot C with plenty of parking available (turn left to get closer main walking area) for easy walking distance to all attractions. The unique Bridge opens several times during the day and gives a nice view from different spots on either side of the bridge to watch. When the bridge is up the traffic piles up a little then releases very quickly once it is down. The bridge has driving and also walking path across it. There is plenty of things to plan into this day along with the bridge viewing with plenty of restaurants and shops in the area.

This old bridge is a marvel. Still operating daily to allow big ships, tour boats, and small sailboats pass underneath.

Fun to watch for the whole family. The boats pass right by in the canal with perfect viewing.

Because we went on a sightseeing cruise on the Vista Fleet we went under the bridge. It is one of a kind. The museum at the foot of the bridge is free and VERY interesting. A monitor there gives you the times that the large ships are expected to arrive or leave. Because of timing (5 a.m. - 11 p.m. - etc.) we were not able to see the large cargo ships arriving or leaving.
