Definitely worth a visit for the view and the charming setting at the pier. We were almost sorry there was no wait (high season hasn’t begun) because it would have been nice to stroll around the area. They accommodate kids with a “baby-safe” lawn and some games.

Large pours at the bar, and the waitress talked us into splitting a sandwich. This is the first time I’ve been undersold by a server! We must have looked like small eaters. The brisket sandwich was good, but the meat was a little sparse and i left feeling a bit hungry.

Our waiter Joel was an expert regarding the menu. He made some great suggestions and dinner was fantastic. There were 10 people in our party and we all enjoyed the food. They got us in quickly. They have fresh fish, local beers and there were 3 vegans with us who were delighted with their dinner.

We were so happy to visit the Barrel Back again. We were first drawn here by their beautiful setting and Lavender Martinis (the simple syrup is from local Lavender Hill Farm). Our kids came with us this time, and our waitress Chrissy was so good with them. We ordered our favorite martinis, chicken wings, black bean nachos and chicken fingers for the kids. The wings are smoked and taste SO good. The nachos were ok, clearly not made by someone who enjoys eating nachos (all of the toppings were piled on top of a thick gooey layer of cheese, and the chips were untouched by toppings, plus they used way too many onions). Overall, we had a great visit and will continue to eat here, but we will skip the nachos.

Stop here often. Hard to beat the Happy Hour, both for food and drinks ! Also a great place to eat dinner, although on the spendy side . Nice menu selection and the service is mostly very good. Highly recommend the Happy Hour to try many menu items at a nice discount. Best view around the area of Walloon Lake. Bar none.

What an amazing spot and establishment. They really put a lot of time and effort into making this a location you will enjoy and it's easy to enjoy when your staring at the beautiful Walloon Lake with a fire pit in the middle of the restaurant (and when those windows completely open in the summer, WOW, it must be incredible).

The way they designed Barrel Back is terrific and one of a kind. But out of our week long visit to the Northern Michigan area, this restaurant did not live up to the others. The service was hit and miss, felt like we were being rushed to make a decision and because we had two younger boys with us, it seemed like we were a bunch of outsiders. However there were other families there, and they have crayons and a good kids menu, so that seemed odd to us. But they did adjust my order for what I wanted and brought extra spoons for dessert without asking, so again, service was hit or miss.

But both of our entrees just didn't really cut it. They were nothing to brag about although the presentation looked great. Maybe it's because we took a risk and got seafood (Fish & Chips, and Michigan Beer Battered Whitefish), which both entrees lacked taste or any sense of satisfaction.

Their deserts were incredible and the view was breathtaking. I'd like to come here again and get something different as an entree, I think there are some potential winners for sure, just think we didn't hit the sweet spot of what Barrel Back offers. It for sure is a winner of a location (Excellent), for a drink and desert spot.

So the potential is there, it has to be there, with the brilliance of the location and design, its a gem waiting to happen, just stay away from the seafood.
