We’ve been coming here since 1996 and we remain addicted. If you’re looking for a secluded retreat in Chianti area in Tuscany with a good kitchen there is no better place than Tenuta di Ricavo. The hotel is tucked away amidst typical Tuscan forest and the buildings form a hamlet in which you stay. The main building houses the restaurant La Pecora Nera which serves a good buffet breakfast but it is the evening menu which delights us time and again. Serving typical Tuscan dishes by an excellent chef who prides in using homegrown herbs and vegetables with all dishes, whether on the a la Carte menu or daily specials. So even if you spend a week or more at beautiful Ricavo there is plenty of ‘food options’ to keep you happy. The staff kept the tables flowing nicely all evenings we ate there ( 5 nights out of a 9 night stay ) and had no complaints. One night we had to eat inside due to inclement weather but generally the tables are set outside in the courtyard making a peaceful backdrop as the evenings drew darker. The hotel never feels crowded as there are only 24 rooms / suites so no need to race to the pool ( there are two pools ) and plenty of sun beds for all guests. Rooms are all individual and spotlessly clean.

The website shows the Tenuta as secluded – and indeed it is! We found the almost hidden unpaved and very dusty road thanks to GPS otherwise it would have been sort of a guess… The welcome was cordial and from the first moment it was evident that the Tenuta is family managed (for, as we learned, already for three generations). The room was very nicely appointed and quiet. The screened windows permitted to have them open during the cooling nights! Early breakfast at the terrace was a delight. The only b-moll was an abundance of biting mosquitos but it seems that this year those pests are omnipresent. In contrast there were hardly and wasps…

Dear Guest,
we all thank you for your review and special words about our Hotel. We are glad you have enjoyed the Tenuta, its facilities and our Staff.
The unpaved road to get here is a so called "strada bianca", an heritage for the Chianti which belongs to Castellina in Chianti municipality and it's the only way to get here.
Mosquitos is exactly as you said, we don't knoe what happened this year in general and although we try in every way to send them away, it is not easy.
We definitely hope to have you here again soon and we send you best regards.

This place is beautiful. So relaxing and calm and in the middle of nowhere. We stayed here for three nights and used it as a base to go travelling around the local area, having stayed in Rome before here it was really nice to have a change of pace.

The staff were really warm and friendly and showed us around the place when we first arrived. When we got there it was in the middle of a thunderstorm ⛈ the staff got us some umbrellas and it was lovely.

The rooms were great, the WiFi was a bit scetchy at times but to be fair given the location it was better than I’d have expected. The room was big and there was a bath in the bathroom which was nice for a relaxing night. The terrace was stunning with a gorgeous view that really did make this room what it was.

The restaurant was great, the wine list was great with the price ranging from €15-€100. The menu was grand and the specials changed each night. You could spend a lot of money here but the food was good quality. They also gave a complimentary small taster of food before the meal started which was lovely.

Me and my partner had a car which I would recommend because even the road to the place was off the beaten track and there isn’t much else around, however I can’t comment on how other people holiday. There were two pools, a gym and a games room that myself and my partner didn’t see because we were out all day visiting local areas. We went to Pisa and Florence for a day each and then came back for food and to sleep on an evening so a car was vital to how we chose to holiday.

We spent a week here using this hotel as a base for our trips around Tuscany. It is in a good location between Florence and Siena. The hotel itself is a lovely tuscan hotel with old stone buildings. Christina, the owner and all of her staff were wonderful. They helped us with anything and everything we needed. One of the great things about this hotel that was unexpected was their amazing restauarant. The food was outstanding. You will enjoy this lovely spot!
