The Ledges is a beautiful state park with waterways that are scenic and pathways that are great to walk on!!! The campground is wonderful!!!! A must when in central Iowa!

Today, Oct 26th, we went to Ledges State Park. It was just beautiful! We hiked and enjoyed the woods and trails. This is a really nice state park worth a visit.

I camped in this park 20 years ago when I was in college, and it has changed a bit. It is still a jewel of natural beauty in the middle of Iowa, but the valley itself will always be reshaping due to flooding. Exposed rock faces, towering trees, and the meandering stream make this a very relaxing place when it isn't busy. We were there on a clear Tuesday in the fall and we saw maybe a dozen people over several hours.

The campground was very nice. Wide spots with power and a few available without a reservation. Although in retrospect, we should have reserved a spot as soon as we knew we were going to stay, since it would have allowed better site options.

The park has no entrance fee. First about the bridges, the water goes over the bridge not under. It had rained the night before we went and there was some water over this bridge. If you have a low riding car, really look carefully to make sure you can go over it. There are about three or four of them. Also, print a map before going, so you can pick the parking lot you want. We did two of the paths, we never finished either of them but according to the map, they would have met. The paths are beautiful and can be easy to almost hard. The area is a treed area, two creeks, and hills due to the sandstone cliffs. If you can not walk the trails, you still can enjoy the drive around the park and stop at one of the picnic areas and have a picnic. Definitely worth taking the extra time to see.

Took the boys (9, 10, 12) here on a Wednesday afternoon. Very few people, low waters, so perfect for walking up the creek. We also hiked up the hill to Table Rock & beyond. Well-maintained trails, but terrible for signs if you get lost. I would not recommend this hike for young children because there are no rails along the cliffs where the trail leads. Scary.
