Location and surroundings beautiful. Reception staff friendly and efficient. Can't comment on the food as we didn't use the restaurant. Nice lounge area to sit in with puzzles and games. The pool was gorgeous. The room - smaller than we're used to in hotels and yes it does look a bit dated but that's probably party by design to keep the country retreat character of the place. It could have been a bit cleaner - the coffee maker was actually dusty as were the window blinds. Not gross or disgusting , just not to a high standard. Main issue we had was with the air con - although there is a 'control' unit on the wall you could only turn it up or down, not off which is what we wanted. We did ask for help with it at reception and a very nice chap came and looked at it for us but ultimately was just as clueless as us as to how to stop it coming on and off (VERY loudly) every 10 minutes or so. I wouldn't go as far as to say avoid it but don't set your expectations too high. I thought it was 'ok' but my husband who booked it was rather disappointed with it. I expect most people who stay here choose it for the fabulous location, not the rooms themselves. We didn't have an opportunity to explore the park more than briefly but what we saw was lovely. It's now $9.00 to enter the park but you only pay that on first entry - if you show your room key you don't have to pay each time you go in.

Room Tip: Our room was ground floor so not as small as some others?

Stay away from Canyon Inn - McCormick's Creek State Park near Spencer, IN.
We stayed Friday, August 25, 2017 in room 305 at the Canyon Inn in McCormick's Creek State Park near Spencer, Indiana. Our room was a deluxe room with one queen bed. Our "deluxe" room was shaped like a wide hallway and very poorly arranged. Because the television stand was pushed against the wall, the television could not be viewed from the bed. The ceiling was low in places around the windows and we had to be careful that we did not hit our heads on these low ceiling areas when getting into bed.
There was dirt on the bathroom floor and a dirty washcloth was hanging on the shower curtain rod. When we opened the refrigerator door, we discovered that the front leg of the fridge was not on the shelf and the fridge tipped precariously.
We went to the checkin desk to ask to be moved to another room. The alternative room we were shown on the first floor of the lodge was very small, cramped and poorly arranged and worse than room 305 so we decided to remain in room 305.
A manager was called from the office by the checkin clerk about our complaints regarding room 305. He said that we could easily move the television cabinet as it was on wheels. We returned to room 305 and tried to move the television cabinet only to discover that it was not on wheels.
The front desk called a "house man" to come to our room. The "house man" turned out to be a small and very nice woman. She moved the television cabinet with a lot of effort (it was not on wheels as the manager had told us). She also leveled the refrigerator and removed the dirty washcloth from the shower curtain rod.
We had originally planned to stay two nights at the Canyon Inn but canceled our second night after seeing the condition of two rooms in the facility.
We ate in the dining room for dinner on Friday evening. The hand sanitizer machine was located in the lobby - outside the dining room - not good planning as we would have had to leave the dining room and return to the lobby to sanitize our hands after handling the menu and the serving spoons. We did order the buffet. Our waitress told us that soft drinks were included with the buffet but that coffee was extra so we each ordered a soft drink rather than coffee. When we got our bill, we saw that we had been charged for our soft drinks and that the waitress had informed us incorrectly.
We stay frequently at other state park lodges in Indiana and Canyon Inn is by far the worst experience we have had. We recommend that others avoid the place.

Was happy with the accommodations and the Inn. The food on the buffet is ok but don't order off the menu. Have been to Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County and prefer Abe Martin and restaurant. Canyon Inn setting is beautiful. Outdoor area is really comfortable. Went to Bloomington to eat

I thank you for your review. Guest reviews make us stronger.
"OK" is not where we strive to be rated so we will work on that area. That said, I was happy to hear how much you enjoy the food at our sister property. I was also glad to hear that you enjoyed our new outdoor furniture.
Again, thank you for your review. I hope you have the occasion to visit us again!

Our family has stayed at the Canyon Inn for over 40 years. Now we are grandparents and even great grandparents and we spent some time with one of our children and his children over last weekend. They stayed in the campground but we stayed in the Inn, our old refuge for many years. We are very pleased with this experience we appreciate all of the upgrades while at the same time preserving the traditional Canyon Inn heritage. We want to give a special recognition to two of our waitresses when we ate in the restaurant in the hotel. One young lady was named Sam, and the other named Ryan, and both of them deserve a real good pat on the back.
We recommend this place is a quiet refuge where one can get away from the struggles of life and enjoy the beauties of nature.

One stays at the Canyon Inn to get away from "the madding crowd". It is a low-key, quiet inn with a large stone hearth in the open area where guests and visitors can sit on a rocking chair contemplating the embers, borrow a puzzle from the shelf or simply play cards, knit or chat. In the reception area, one can buy the typical sundries and pop, but what makes this place special is the local fare and wares available f.eks. cards by Kenny Bucklew, postcards with motifs from the park taken by Marc Evans, Clay City pottery stoneware, and flavored popcorn. There is a distinct emphasis on promoting what is local, nearby and the beauty of the park itself.

Outside in front are Adirondack type chairs underneath he towering trees which offer shade even on the hottest days, or you can use the Inn's guest pool conveniently located some 20 paces from the end of the west wing. My family availed ourselves of the tennis and volleyball court, too.

The dining room with its shiny wooden floors, is divided into two sections: the bird room where every table has an unhindered view of the many feeders where Indiana's birds are to be seen and the occasional squirrel skillfully manoeuvres themselves for a free meal. The other dining area is where the locally renowned buffet stands. It offers two soups daily, a salad bar and a warm/hot foods section. They offer a large, typical Hoosier Sunday breakfast buffet, too. Do not skip the opportunity to have a biscuit, or as many as your caloric conscience will allow! Portions from the a la carte menu are generous, midwestern ones. Order the fried tenderloin sandwich with the intention of eating a meal!
The Inn does not serve alcohol, and my one criticism pertaining to the food is that although the pie selection is good, the crusts are not.

The size of the rooms do vary. The baths as well, and I am personally fond of the ones with the small fully tiled shower stalls. Ask for a room with brick walls and pine accentuates; they offer a more cozy atmosphere. The decor is not modern, but modest. As the Inn was originally a sanatorium, I believe their philosophy to be that sufficient is good although I did have a choice of five pillows on one double bed. There are ice-machines, telephone and a tv (not plasma, not HD), and refrigerators can be rented.

As stated earlier, one goes to the Canyon Inn to meet friends and family while perhaps attending a reunion (one can reserve a shelter at the park for daytime picnics), to hike the trails or just to steer clear of chain hotels in that part of the state. I keep going back to stay there because the staff is efficient and polite, the rooms are modestly priced, the location is stupendous if you're looking for quiet. Rooms are easy to book online, and have experienced, as on this last stay, that special requests or messages to the management are always answered even is they cannot be met. That, in my opinion, is the first step in good service.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with brick walls if you like a more personal, rustic touch.
