My wife is an Art teacher and Masters-Level Art Historian. After having visited The D'Orsay, Louvre, Rodin Museum, Orangerie, etc. in Paris, The Rijks and Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, The British Museum in London, and experienced most of the art that Florence, Rome, and Milan has to offer in the last 5 years, we can safely say that The Art Institute of Chicago ranks with the best in the world. The Impressionist exhibits are particularly noteworthy as are the early 20th century American offerings in that the museum owns some of the most iconic art (American Gothic, Nighthawks) in existence. My particular favorites are the Marc Chagall works in stained glass which are beautifully and dramatically displayed.
We spent two wonderful days visiting and listening to excellent commentary on the portable devices provided. Also, the museum staff are most helpful and friendly.
A great experience.
