This was our second year staying at Kingwood for a men's retreat. It's a great location, lots to do, and a beautiful resort. This year we had a smaller group of 35 (this visit was in July 2018).

As the group coordinator both years, I hoped to solve for some of the prior year's challenges, but despite some changes, it just resulted in different challenges. At first we were not getting any responsiveness from the coordinator at Kingwood, and after many attempts over multiple weeks, we were finally told that person had left. We also wanted to have group meals on-site instead of eating in restaurants in town. There were multiple last minute changes in the food options, orders were wrong, and the payment process was very cumbersome. On the final billing there were two add-on charges which our guys firmly denied were their charges. In the end, Kingwood identified that they indeed were charges for other guests who were not part of our group (this took weeks to resolve). As well, for the total cost, Kingwood charged a credit card from the prior year's stay, which was not the correct card. They claimed we had never given them a different card, yet they had accurately charged the correct card for the deposit we had paid for 2018 - they couldn't find record of it.

Bottom line, very nice resort, but based on our experience, we would not recommend trying to coordinate a group event with them.

Was invited to a Wedding at the Kingwood Country Club. The wedding garden was picturesque and the waitstaff was very attentive. The reception was held in the restaurant and the place settings and the buffet was fabulous. The roast beef, Salmon and Chicken entrees were delicious. The bar was full service. The Restaurant Mgr and her staff were very much on top of things and it showed. We had a wonderful time at the venue.

Great very well kept and clean. Beautiful views. Great staff! We got up to a flat tire. They helped us take it off and put on the spare tire. We took it to Walmart, all that was open on Labor Day. Can't say enough about the staff's friendliness.

This “hotel” is so dated and worn, it’s a complete disappointment. Rooms are small, furnishings are old, and it all feels kind of musty. For the life of me, I cannot understand how I paid $375 for two nights in a basic double room.
The “mountain views” are questionable—more like hills and not particularly remarkable or even visible.
The restaurant was just plain awful. Forced into a very overpriced “Mexican buffet” that tasted bad. No menu options whatsoever.
This place purports to be a country club. It does have a golf course, but if it’s passing for a country club in any other way, I feel sorry for its members.

Condemned: express complete disapproval of, typically in public.

We were so disappointed in this place and had such big plans for staying two nights, using the spa, getting a massage, relaxing. Boy, were we wrong.

One of the attached photos will explain why this place is in such bad shape but the management tries to disguise it as a thriving resort. The most they have here is a golf course. We were given our room in a "renovated" hotel but they failed to mentioned that the "renovation" was in the 1980s and it was little more than a coat of paint. The room we were given, 310, smelled so bad of mold and mildew that we could barely breathe. We were given another room (the only room available), 201, and it was clean but the wood on the doors was rotted, the tile in the bathroom and shower has been caulked over the grout that has fallen out. It wasn't the King bed room that we asked for an had two queen beds. The mattresses were so hard it felt like we were sleeping on the ground in sleeping bags. It was a very small room and very small bathroom. Cracks can be seen in every crevice. When I tried to get drinks for us, the soft drink machine in our building took my money and the one in the other building wouldn't take any money at all. I went to the check-in building/golf shop to get drinks and they charge 1.5 times the machine price and have a better selection of beers than soft drinks. The 48-room hotel is in such disrepair that it needs to be torn down.

The spa was unattended and looked like something out of the 60s. Nothing has been updated since it was built in 1968. You can swim in a pool with your spouse but if you want to sit in the Jacuzzi, you have to separate and go to the men's Jacuzzi and the women's Jacuzzi. Half the chairs around the pool didn't have cushions and were dated. At least someone had stocked towels there. Of course, we were the only ones in the pool that night so there were plenty. The pool has been filled in to 4 feet deep and the diving board removed so all you really do is stand in mid-chest water. This area too was in bad shape. A lot of rotted wood and milky windows.

We cancelled our second day of our stay and have definitely marked this one off our list of places to stay. Please do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. The management seems to be okay with the ruse of pretending this is a nice place but it's not.

Room tip: Smell the room before you let them run your credit card.
