The Old Fort Park Archeological Site provides an opportunity to visit the remains of an old fort along the riverfront. It is easy to find and is close to the New Smyrna Beach Museum of History which makes it a good opportunity to see both sites. Unfortunately there is little to no information about the site. There are a couple of plaques, although one discusses the history of a hotel that was on the site and the other a general history of the area. If the city would put more work into the site and provide more information about the fort, or at least what the history is believed to be, it would greatly enhance the visit. Right now you basically are looking at a foundation with no known background.
You are able to walk around and on top of the ruins which gives you a nice view of the fort. It is interesting seeing the foundation and getting a feel of the sites importance given the geography. There is also a lot of open space and some park benches located throughout the park to sit back and enjoy.
If you are into history I would recommend visiting the site if you have time to spare. Given the lack of information about the site don't expect to learn much. I would recommend visiting the museum across the street in conjunction with visiting the park to get the most out of your visit.
