This place is terrible!

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 17 Mar 2023via mobile
Front desk receptionist doesn’t speak English. Nobody seems to know what is going on. For the cost of this place, we should understand something, anything that the receptionist said. Way too expensive for a run down place. The sinks don’t drain. The boat ramp is barely a boat ramp. There’s nobody to answer questions. Very incompetent staff! We stayed here one year ago, and this place has gone downhill!
We won’t be back!

Dont believe what you see in picturesn all our years traveling I have never written a bad review. Here is our first and hopefully last. We booked 5 days here. As we opened the door in room 112 we were overwhelmed with a chemical smell so bad that I could not stay in room longer than 5 minutes. The door jambs were ripped apart like somone tried to break in. We got out and walked down to the canal boat launch. We were shocked to see a cess pool like area and imeaditly started getting bit by bugs.. We decided we had to run. We told one of the staff this issue she didn't offer another room and said we could not get our money back if we left. The girl in the office was more helpful and did offer us to see another room but at that point we just want to get out as quick as we could..
We tried to get our money back thru our credit card but the mgmt is refusing to budge. Very sad operation.
On a good note we went to the Fairfield down the street and absolutely loved it.
    Beware!!!

This is our third time staying in the Keys, as we are not from the USA we were not aware that now is high season and discovered we couldn't go to our usual place. We spent 4X more for this place and turned out way worse than the place we normally stay. Not a single photo of stairs are on any website representing Coconut Cay. Lots of professionally taken photos, from the right angles making the rooms look much bigger. But not 1 single photo of the stairs. I'm here with my 70 year old mother who has been operated by her foot and has a hard time walking on stairs. We tried to get a room as seen in the photos and were yelled at by the receptionist. Not a single hint of empathy, and extremely rude and even hostile. We spent 2000$ dollars on a room that should have been 600$. We are going to complain everywhere about this horrible racist treatment (the receptionist was very polite when I came back in with an American guest who tried to help us). She claimed that they were fully booked but I can see that not all rooms are occupied on websites and here as lots of parking spots are empty. What you see is NOT what you get, do not trust the photos online, please see mine. No view to speak of either. Internet also keeps falling out. Close to an airport, you keep hearing helicopters and planes.

Room tip: Avoid if you can, horrible experience horrible customer service, highly misrepresented.

We were a bit worried upon arriving to the hotel because it looked more like a motel, but it turned out that there are also 2-stories houses of 8 rooms each (4 on each floor, facing both ways) and that’s where our room was. Well I don’t know about the motel-like rooms, but the ones in the little houses (and ours) were charming, very cosy, clean, comfortable and in good condition. Each room has a shared balcony with the room next door. Ours was on the first floor so that we had nothing but the clear blue sky above our heads while eating the grab-and-go breakfast (porridge, yoghurt, orange, apple juice and mini blueberry muffin): simple, nice and nourishing.
Small flaws: 1) the mattresses were a little too soft. Not sure if that was intentional or if they were a bit tired; 2) the front door was a bit stuck, we had to push it hard to open it; 3) the hotel is located near an airport where helicopters routinely take of or land late at night or early in the morning. Can be quite noisy.
    A very enjoyable stay all-in-all. I recommend.

Right next to it is the Brutus seafood restaurant that I also warmly recommend for its excellent food and nice staff (and cosy atmosphere), all for a reasonable price.

The only thing the place has going for it is it’s in the keys ! Paid for a laundry card that wouldn’t work and was told by night clerk that it sounded like a personal problem ! If you can handle planes and helicopters constantly and racist staff then you will enjoy this place !

You can launch a boat here into narrow canal fullof vegetation on the water. The kayaks are OK but you get half the mangrove inside your boat and its hard to navigate the entrance to the bay because of the debris in the canal. Staff were helpful enough and grab and go breakfast was fine although why there is no restaurant dining there was not apparent. Like everywhere the excuse is Covid. the pool was OK. Barely value for money but we got used to it., Blinds in poor state and the sooner they get on with replacing them, the better.

Room tip: Get a double queen for adewquate size
