Worst service ever

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Aug 2023
I have been to many hotels, but when I stayed at this Hyatt in Key West, I experienced no service for the room, no service at the pool, no fitness, just basically a room that came with a 17.00 resort fee. A resort with no services. It gets better. When I checked in I was told at the front desk that parking was a total of 26.88 for my 3 night stay and I agreed, but when I checked out after 3 nights, I was charged for every night at 26.88 equalling 80.62. When I complained the manager told me that the check in person was wrong to tell me it was only 26.88 and she was sorry that I was told that incorrect price and did nothing to secure my return to the Hyatt someday. Do not stay at the Hyatt as it has become a timeshare location.

Room Tip: Stay some place other than the Hyatt Sunset Harbor, Key West.

Very nice . Recommended.
The staff was very nice and accommodating. The property was well-kept, nice, and relaxing. The rooms were well situated and the property was in a great location. We stayed in 4 different places while in Key West and this one seemed the most worth the $.

Hyatt Sunset Harbor is one of the premier resorts in key West. The location is unbeatable. The grounds and pool are beautiful. The rooms are very nice and have regular upgrades. Cruise ships will pull up across the harbor a couple of days a week. They always leave before before 6pm. This has never bothered me and I find them interesting. The majority of the negative views are for those who have rented studios. These are like hotel rooms and often do not have a view. Some studios do have Windows with views. Ask when you are booking if this is important to you. If you book on the first floor you will be ground level so you will see passer by and such. Stick to the one bedrooms or two bedrooms as these will have living areas and patios. Building 5, 1 and 2 are preferable. In that order. Have fun.

This is a Hyatt Residence Club property. That makes it very different from a hotel in that owners are deeded a specific week in a specific unit for use year after year. Owners within the HRC portfolio can trade around to different Hyatts or they can use their home deeded units. I am an owner in another location and I have been to all but 1 HRC property. This was my second visit to Sunset Harbor and it has continued to slide down. HRC properties have certain minimum standards which most properties in the portfolio far exceed but not this one. The units are very dated and run down. If I were to assign stars for each category here is how it would go:

Location - 5 stars The location can't be beat. You are on the water, you can walk or ride a bike to so many restaurants, bars, and things to do.

Facility - no stars. The place is literally falling apart. There are braces holding up the balconies on one of the buildings. The rooms are very dark if you are unlucky enough to be on the first floor. Do not stay in a studio - there is only one two foot wide window that faces a busy walkway so you have to leave the shade down. The studios are a single square room with a mini refrigerator, coffee machine and toaster. They are totally dark and don't have a table to eat at or work at. There are two chairs at the end of the bed that face the TV. There is a renovated bathroom with a dish drying rack, dish soap and dish towel on the shelf below the sink. As if they think this part of the kitchenette and you should do dishes there? Don't make any sense. In the 1 or 2 BRs the kitchen/living room areas are old and beat up. A 2BR unit comes with 4 sets of towels and two sets of tiny tiny shampoo, conditioner and body wash. They are not the same high end brands as at other HRC locations.

Cleanliness - no stars. The dishes in the cabinet were not clean (maybe the previous guests rinsed them?) For sure they had not been in the dishwasher. There were Chex cereal here and there throughout the unit including in the drawer of the bedroom and under the kitchen table. Unlike other HRC properties, cleaning is not included. (Some include every day and some halfway through the week.) If you want more clean towels, a garbage bag for the sink, additional shampoo, soap, etc you have to make a call or go to the desk and ask for it. Rooms were not ready by 4 and there does not seem to be any way to clean the rooms with waiting guests first. It appears that the housekeeping is contracted out and Sunset management is detached.

Stars in those categories average 1.8 so I gave this property 2 stars.

Common area - 3 stars. The pool area is wide open, very nicely landscaped and the hot tub is hot which are all worth a lot but the chairs are super uncomfortable and the towels are tattered and stained. Also, they are super thin. Unlike other HRC properties, there is no food or drink available on the property. No pop up bar or snacks available.

Staff - 1 star for the new manager. The poor guy has been dealt a tough hand. His staff has been there since the beginning of time and they don't know anything other than what they see in front of their faces. They mostly cater to the same people who bought their weeks 25 years ago and have been coming back every year who also don't know anything different. The staff is complacent and the standards are low. One woman at the front desk told me that everyone loves it here. I asked her if she had visited the recent reviews and she said that people only complain so they can get their points back.

The ownership should spend some money to gut the whole place or give it back to any hotel chain to start over. If you are using points, go anywhere else and then spend your leftover points at Sunset Harbor. At least you will get a good week someplace else.

Room tip: Rent a bike and ride everywhere

With some recent negative reviews, I felt compelled to write a positive response.
We just spent a week at the Hyatt Sunset Harbor and enjoyed every minute of it.

Beware, this is a timeshare condominium unit comprised of (from what I could tell,) efficiency, one, and two bedroom units. I would only recommend staying in a two bedroom unit.

Our unit was extremely clean, well laid out, wonderful views, and comfortable furniture and beds.

The two bedroom units came in a "lock off" unit where a one bedroom is connected to an efficiency. If you stay in a "one bedroom" you have a door separating you from the separate efficiency unit.
The other two bedroom units are "townhouses" with a master up and a separate, but connected, guest room below. You also have two full bathrooms along with two large decks (though you are very close to our neighbors - so thankfully we met and liked ours.)

We had a full kitchen: Full size fridge, four burner stove and oven, all utensils, and 6 settings. Air conditioning and wi-fi worked great for us.

The pool was heated and the hot tub was hot. Pool towels were available so you dont have to use your unit towels. Get there early as some people claim spots (reserve) with their towels despite signs prohibiting it.

There is no room service and no onsite bar or restaurant.

Location was fantastic. Walk out the back gate and onto the waterfront steps to Mallory Sq. Numerous tourist locations within a stone's throw, though just far enough away to avoid crowds and noise of Duval.

YOU ARE IN THE EYW LANDING FLIGHT PATH. As an aviation geek myself, we did not mind this. Most flights have arrived by 9PM though some delays came in later, Nothing overnight, and nothing too early.
You are also next to the cruise ship dock. We had three ships dock in seven days Ships must depart by sunset.

The concierge inquired if she could assist with anything one time and didnt bother us again.

Room tip: Two bedroom townhouses. The "harbor view" rooms will be blocked by a cruise ship if in port.

ROSA at the front desk was absolutely amazing. She was kind and helpful and would always make sure we were having a good time. KATHY was incredibly kind and amazing.

Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was undesirable.
• The bathroom shower curtains were stained.
• The room looked old. Renovate the tile and carpet flooring. TVs were small.
• The number of amenities for a Hyatt are disgraceful.
• No room service.
• No gym
• No cleaning service even upon request

The location is right next to where the cruise ships dock. The boat people are loud and obnoxious and ruin the experience.

We were pressured into going to a 90 minute timeshare presentation. I would never buy something here based on the accommodations of our room. If they’re trying to sell a spot in the Hyatt club…they sorely missed the mark. In addition to being pressured into the 90 minute presentation, the concierges called me at least a half dozen times in two days about the presentation. I had already explained that I would be going and confirmed my appointment time and yet would still receive phone calls about it. It was aggressive and annoying and detracted from the trip.

The WiFi was atrocious. They were doing some upgrade ON THE WEEK OF THANKSGIVING. Absolutely absurd. We had perfect connection everywhere on the island EXCEPT in our “resort”.

The best part about staying here was Rosa and Kathy’s kindness and the fact that housekeeping was EXCEPTIONALLY responsive with requests for new towels.

Do not stay here.

Room tip: Do not stay here.
