My company returned to Pelican Hill a second time for a partner retreat (after a few years elsewhere). It was good the first time but even better on this last visit. With few exceptions but most people felt the property is beautiful, perfectly maintained and the rooms are very nice, Views are gorgeous. Although the hotel was fully booked, it is so large that in most cases you just don't feel impinged upon by the other activities. But it is too big to give an intimate atmosphere.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. I give them very high marks -- equivalent to or better than Four Season or Ritz Carlton.

Most of the people in our group felt that the food was good but just OK.

It is an expensive property but generally competitive with similar resorts.

Spa treatments were great (particularly Maria on the deep tissue massage)

Look for Roxanne, the hawk handler who brings the hawk to the pool and certain other areas to control pigeons, crows and a few other pests.

Room tip: We like the bungalows.

We enjoyed a long weekend at the Villas at Pelican Hill--the two bedroom villa being ideal for the two of us. Service at the Villas Clubhouse was excellent and we were very well looked after. (Thank you Shelley!) Food at the resort was delicious and the ambiance was relaxing and refined. The Villas are a bit less crowded than the main hotel, especially the pool and fitness center. We would highly commend this property.

Room tip: The ocean view villa was spectacular

We spent several days at this beautiful location. What a find!
From check in - greeted warmly and efficiently by Aaron - to check out - this place did not disappoint. We had a gorgeous bungalow with views of the ocean. The decor is nice, and the bed was very good. We both liked the set-up of the bathroom with the large tub where you could soak and still see the ocean.
Every request was handled swiftly and professionally.
Room service was great and the restaurants were lovely. We enjoyed chatting with the Italian bartender. Actually, all encounters with staff were truly pleasant.
It is a nice location for taking walks or just hanging out by the pool.
One thing about the pool - we traveled as a couple and noted there were many families with small children. I have no issue with that, but lots of little kids in the jacuzzi was not great and we both thought it would have been nice if there had been a "family" hot tub and an adults-only hot tub.
We have already made plans to return to this gem.

Room tip: Get a room with a view.

Hi Shanah,

Thank you for visiting Pelican Hill! We're delighted to read Aaron left such a positive first impression of the Resort and that you enjoyed your Bungalow accommodations. I appreciate your suggestion for an adult-only hot tub and will share that with your team. As another tranquil on-property amenity, please know access to the Spa's Acqua Colonnade (soaking tubs, saunas, etc.) is available to all Resort guests over the age of 18. Thanks again for your insight, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Warm regards,

We booked a 4 night stay in a bungalow for a gathering with friends who also stayed at the property. Our bungalow did not have a sea view but we didn’t care. It was lovely and had a balcony which we could enjoy in complete privacy due to the well thought out landscaping. The room had a large bathroom with a shower and a tub, double sinks, a big king bed and beautifully clean. I walked to Crystal Cove State Park, a lovely downhill walk, 1 mile from the main building. Yes the walk back to the property is uphill and a bit challenging but enjoyable. There is a path the entire way and a crosswalk with a light to allow pedestrians across the busy street to the park. The resort provides a shuttle to the old refurbished Crystal Cove beach houses and the famous Beachcomber restaurant. The shuttle is needed because the walk is significantly farther. The beach houses give you an idea of what California looked like in the 30s, 40s and 50s. Wonderful!

We also took an Uber to town, driven by a friendly, proud local who told us which bars and shops to enjoy. (The drive is about 30 minutes and costs about $20 depending on traffic.)

The only reason I did not give the resort 5 stars is due to the fact that we had a bit of difficulty getting shuttles when we needed them. Our bungalow was .3 miles from the main building (yes I clocked it on my Fitbit) and a difficult walk in heels. We had several functions to attend in cocktail attire all over the property. I am a walker so I just bought a pair of comfy shoes in town and carried my heels in my purse or hand. We talked with the front desk and after a couple more mixups we managed to be picked up promptly for our airport transfers. Despite all this, I loved the resort and look forward to visiting again.

Hello Claire,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review of your time at Pelican Hill! While I'm glad to read that you enjoyed your overall stay in the Bungalows and had the opportunity to explore our surrounding communities, I apologize for the inconvenient delays you experienced with our on-property coach service. I've personally shared your feedback with our Guest Services Managers, and we hope that your travels bring you back to our seaside village very soon!

Kind regards,
