Great location, great staff— but one night is enough.

Metro Plaza is in perfect, easy walking distance location for Old LA Olvera Street (don’t miss the Avila Adobe), Philippe’s famous restaurant, and Union Station. It was ok for a one-night stay. I hope the review below gives an idea of what to expect.

I felt safe walking around in the day, but. fwould not walk here after dark.

Half of the hotel is recently renovated with new corridor carpet and modern rooms.

Front desk people, including manager, are excellent and helpful. Despite being busy with several foreign tour groups, the staff remained patient and gracious.

Lobby is very basic, with nowhere to sit. There’s a big screen of security camera views, and a security guard by the elevator, but axcard key is not required to open the elevator door. this might be a good safety, security measure— seen in many big-city hotels— for this hotel to add

A week before arriving, I spoke with the manager, requested a recently renovated room, and got one. But the window looked out to a barbed-wire topped wall! I asked if possible to switch to a room facing the beautiful old post office and Union Station, but the receptionist said the hotel was full, with the one available room reeked of cigarette smoke, despite the hotel following “no smoking” policy!

My room was large, bed was comfortable. There’s a large TV, mini fridge but no microwave. There’s a very large desk/shelf area and two hammocks to sit on. The bathroom was newly renovated, with an oddly placed rain- shower in the center of the shower-enclosure ceiling rather than the wall, which made it impossible to escape getting drenched hair. Unless you want a shampoo, bring a shower cap. The water temperature control faucet in the shower starts hot in “on” vertical position, and gets colder as you turn it to the left, which you can do only to 1/4 turn— different from standard shower controls.

Bath towels were small, thin and scratchy—I suspect to avoid any temptation for towel thieves. Likewise, there’s an in-room ironing board, but no iron. For that, you go to the lobby and give your drivers license or cash deposit and borrow an iron.

If I again had a morning Amtrak train to board, I’d stay at Metro Plaza knowing its quirks and limitations.

Room Tip: Ask for renovated room with view toward Post Office/Union Station instead of barbed-wire on wall...

HOTEL HELL. Hotel is undergoing renovations (long overdue as looks shabby). Construction noises. Dust. Fumes. Creaky floorboards. Tremors. Hotel security is non-existent. At check-in, homeless guy asked me to buy him dinner + creepy old male hotel guest told me his room number so I could visit his hotel room. Ignored both requests. Ended up at another (nice) hotel (Best Western Dragon Gate on Hill St).

Pros: the staff were nice, and it was good to always have a guard in the lobby. Nice taco spot next door. Affordable and close to Union Station. Public park a few blocks north. Cons: Loud! The doors didn't stop any sound. The partition door to the neighbor's room might as well have been wide open. Smelly old carpets. Complicated neighborhood - homeless folks sleeping a half block away in any direction. Overall it's a good place to save money, but I'm not sure I'd return.

Hotel was fine despite some negative reviews. 5 min walk to Union station and right next to Olvera street. Sad to see so many homeless people but they didn’t cause problems. Room was comfortable and quiet. Basic but good price.

This is a good hotel for the price, at A$214 or US$145 per night for a twin room. The hotel is a little "tired' and the carpets are overdue for replacement but its clean the staff are friendly and helpful. We stayed here for 2 nights. It was within 10 minutes walk to the LA Union Station (a tourist attraction in it's self). It is convenient for catching the metro (to other parts of the city) and airport bus. Also the buses to San Diego and Las Vegas depart from here. The room was quite large with table and chairs and a refrigerator. There is a small café, which serves good food, and supermarket under the hotel. It is also a close to the Olvera Street Mexican Markets; wonderful shopping.

Location suited us, clean pleasant hotel. Decided to eat in the restaurant/ bar area…unfortunately our order was forgotten so that was a bit disappointing. Staff friendly enough but we seemed invisible ! Bed comfortable and quiet, would recommend this hotel
