Disappointed

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Nov 2019via mobile
I needed a last minute hotel reservation after a long day of travel and working in Southern California. While I wasn’t expecting opulence, I was expecting a little bit more. The room smells of paint and while it appears to be clean it’s quite old and aged. There is no elevator here and while I’m perfectly capable of walking up a flight of stairs, I was exhausted after being on my feet all day training with a suitcase a computer and a large overnight bag to look up two flights of stairs.
When I arrived here I had already pre-book the room, and they proceeded to tell me they were going to put $125 extra as a security deposit on my credit card. There is no mention of this anywhere on the website, and they also told me that they would hold that charge on my account for 3 to 7 business days. I don’t necessarily need the money on my credit card but it’s quite annoying to have somebody type your money for a security deposit when you were staying in a hotel.
They don’t have mini outlets for plugs but I did find one located on top of an old digital clock, better than nothing.
I also didn’t feel incredibly safe in this hotel. They tucked me all the way into the back as a single traveling business woman and while I’m perfectly capable to take care of myself I still found myself watching the rickety door off and on throughout the night. You can take a look at the pictures that I’ve attached here, but I definitely will not be staying here again.

I really didn't want to give this place a poor/average review, however, I think it's important to let other travelers know what to expect.

On arrival at the hotel, I was greeted by one of the front desk staff members, check-in seemed fairly seamless until he mentioned the $5 per day parking fee. The hotel site I had booked this through listed free parking, and so this was challenged. The front desk staff member proceeded to tell me they changed the parking policy and now it's $5 per day... insert a few minutes of back on forth on this until this member of staff decided there was actually a policy where if you sign up for the Choice Club you can have free parking.

Honestly, this parking issue turned a fairly easy and friendly check-in into a much less enjoyable experience and within 20 minutes they had already put a downer on this stay... but let's not worry too much here. And yes, this person eventually gave me the free parking but not without signing up for Choice Club which I did not want to do.

The room itself was on the 2nd floor and there are no elevators for those with heavy bags!

The room had 2 big beds and they were extremely comfy, the room was also kitted out with a lounge chair, 1 bedside table, fridge, desk, desk chair, wardrobe and ironing board.
The bathroom was fitted with a bath/shower and toilet in one room and the vanity sink area just outside the bathroom in the main room.

At a first glance the room looked great, especially given the price point but I was wrong.

The first evening, I spotted a roach running across the floor... then the second night, it oddly seemed like only one would appear a day, maybe the others were just good at hiding. They were appearing near the front door on the wall, I assumed they were coming through the bottom of the door.
After a few nights I spotted one on the headboard which proceeded onto the bed YUCK! I got rid of all of them but when removing the one in the bed it seemed the house keeping weren't cleaning these rooms very well... the bed base was covered in dust, actually masses of dirty fluff at this point which I found pretty disgusting.
As for cleaning, I'm not sure if it's standard for this hotel but they seemed to only clean the room once a week which I found odd.

The hotel listed a swimming pool but sadly this was closed by California Health for Health issues.

The hotel also includes a free breakfast which, if you don't have any dietary requirements seemed pretty decent.
It included coffee, tea, yogurt, fruit, packaged pastries, breads, a waffle making station, sausage patty and omelet patty.

As a vegetarian, I went down to try the breakfast twice however on both occasions I noticed guests picking up the meat with the egg tongs and vice versa, might not bother some people but I chose not to eat in there after seeing that... nothing on the hotel.

Now I've spent quite a few chars giving all the negatives of this hotel, I sadly can't take away the dirt, roaches and parking issues. I will say however that during my stay when I went to ask staff questions be it front desk, management or housekeeping they were all very friendly and tried to accommodate as much as possible.

Overall, if you get a 'clean' room then you'll get a bargain.

We travel to Long Beach twice a year to visit relatives and we always stay here. The staff treats us very well (on this trip, Mirla at the Front Desk and Dominique in the Breakfast Room deserve special mention) and the rooms are comfortable. They are in the middle of renovations so it's a bit rough around the edges but that's to be expected. The bed was quite good and we're looking forward to seeing the rooms when they are finished. There is a new Cambodian restaurant right next door that is terrific and there's a donut shop across the side street that hits the spot. It's a typical continental breakfast that works for a free option. They let us leave our bags for the day when we left so we could do some sightseeing before our flight home.

Room tip: We have not had a bad room here.

Clean establishment with comfortable beds for a rest stop on the way to destination.. Convenient location for freeway access.

Soundproofing was good since there was ambient noise outside from street.

We got an upstairs room not facing the street so it was quiet

This was booked as a weekend getaway/work trip. The first thing on checkin was the front desk wanting to charge for parking...never mind the website says free parking. All the staff could do was argue. They finally waived the charge. I get to the room and discover there is no wifi. I was told they were having trouble with their provider. I ended up tethering my laptop to my phone. I haven't seen the bill yet but expect this probably cost me $30-40. Again nothing but excuses from management. The water pressure in the shower was lame. And the last morning I was awakened by a work crew resurfacing the parking lot. Obviously I won't be staying here again and I would recommend anyone considering this property look elsewhere.

Old and tired but clean and comfy beds, has a fridge but nothing in it, a small microwave, a filtered coffee machine, loads of off street parking. A pool (albeit empty for maintenance but it’s too cold to swim at the moment anyway..the price includes a simple breaky, good customer service too
