Great Choice in Long Beach

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Aug 2023
We loved Hotel Maya and would highly recommend it to anyone who has to stay in Long Beach, especially if you are going on a Carnival Cruise. We stayed for 2 days prior to our cruise and found it much more like a resort than a hotel. Our room in building two overlooked the water and oceanfront Long Beach, with a nice patio area to sit and enjoy the view. We spent an afternoon at the pool which was clean, had a bar & bbq area as well as private canopy areas if you wanted to rent one. Happy Hour prices were great at the main restaurant again with great view. They have a shuttle that will take you to the Carnival Cruise Terminal or into Long Beach, just book it it the front desk. For active families/groups there is seadoo, paddle board & pontoon boat rentals on site. In the evenings there are several gas fire pits to sit around and meet fellow guests if you like. The Restaurant has a varied menu that I think would keep most happy, it’s a little expensive but the food stands up to the prices. Unfortunately there was a strike by the staff while we were there, so wake up time was definitely earlier than we would liked, but we understood. I must say that management handled the strike well, stepping up and waiting tables where needed. If we are back in the area we will definitely be staying here. I only gave it a 4 as the actual room could use some maintenance, but nothing we couldn’t live with.

Beautiful hotel but do not stay here they are apparently part of a huge hotel strike and we were woken up at 6 am to the workers strikers screaming in front of the lobby. They have been screaming for an hour and a half so far.

Room tip: Don’t stay here picketers came at 6 am screaming outside

We stay in a lot of hotels, 40 - 60 per year. We confine our stays mostly to Hilton because we like the consistency and the treatment we receive as Diamonds.

This property was no exception. Great room, well situated property and well maintained grounds.

The real delight though was the friendly and gracious exchanges I had with Michael (senior member of the Franchisees team) and Ash (Manger of the onsite Fuego restaurant.) Both men demonstrated what I can only assume is a standard they wish to for their employees, addressing my queries (on an ongoing labor dispute and a surprise change on to a food order.) I felt heard and cared for, not at all hurried. It was almost like I was a long lost relation.

Thanks to you both for making me feel so welcome.

The hotel was experiencing a staffing strike days before we arrived, however we weren't notified until three hours before check-in, and were told that we were notified only because we are Hilton Rewards members. We were told we could see some picketing and the only service impacted was lunch at the restaurant. We were told that the strike impacted all of LA County so we assumed it wouldn't help to rebook somewhere else. We had already traveled for eight hours from out-of-state so decided not to turn around. When we arrived we were surprised to see not only around 50 picketers on the property but them using mega-phones, drums, trumpets, and other noise makers right in front of the entrance door blocking it. We had to get through them to the front desk and couldn't even hear the employee as we checked-in they were so loud. We then learned that there was no room keeping service and breakfast and dinner would be buffet. We also learned that the protestors started at 7AM every day and went non-stop until 8PM.

The hotel itself is old and had no accessibility to get our suitcases up to the elevator so had to carry them up a flight of stairs. Once at the dinner buffet we found out that it was $54 per person which is more expensive than anything on the regular menu. Later we found the the breakfast buffet was $32 per person and again, way more expensive then anything on the menu. We assume they had to cater it in we we, the guests, were carrying the costs. The shower drained slow the first night and by the second evening we found that it was completely blocked and didn't drain until the next morning. Then we found ants in the room. Also, the protesters decided to walk around the hotel and start picketing right under our room. We had enough and went to check-out to find another hotel. We found that this was the only hotel in the area with strikers, and that not all of LA County was impacted like they said originally. A horrible experience all around. We ended up at the Holiday Inn Express on Newport Beach for a fraction of the cost, with a breakfast included, and loved every minute of it.

This place is well located and very well done. The room was big, clean, and had a great view. The location is about a 15 minute walk to the tourist stuff in Long Beach, and less than that to the Queen Mary. There is a water taxi stop at the hotel, but it appears to be defunct.
The gym is well equipped. The pool is also lovely, and is served by its own bar.

I stay here every time I’m in Long Beach. The service is outstanding, the food is very good. The rooms are clean and comfortable but the property needs updating. It is also a wedding venue so be prepared for noise in buildings one and two, we had to move in the middle of the night once. Overall, I love this Hotel
