The hotel was experiencing a staffing strike days before we arrived, however we weren't notified until three hours before check-in, and were told that we were notified only because we are Hilton Rewards members. We were told we could see some picketing and the only service impacted was lunch at the restaurant. We were told that the strike impacted all of LA County so we assumed it wouldn't help to rebook somewhere else. We had already traveled for eight hours from out-of-state so decided not to turn around. When we arrived we were surprised to see not only around 50 picketers on the property but them using mega-phones, drums, trumpets, and other noise makers right in front of the entrance door blocking it. We had to get through them to the front desk and couldn't even hear the employee as we checked-in they were so loud. We then learned that there was no room keeping service and breakfast and dinner would be buffet. We also learned that the protestors started at 7AM every day and went non-stop until 8PM.
The hotel itself is old and had no accessibility to get our suitcases up to the elevator so had to carry them up a flight of stairs. Once at the dinner buffet we found out that it was $54 per person which is more expensive than anything on the regular menu. Later we found the the breakfast buffet was $32 per person and again, way more expensive then anything on the menu. We assume they had to cater it in we we, the guests, were carrying the costs. The shower drained slow the first night and by the second evening we found that it was completely blocked and didn't drain until the next morning. Then we found ants in the room. Also, the protesters decided to walk around the hotel and start picketing right under our room. We had enough and went to check-out to find another hotel. We found that this was the only hotel in the area with strikers, and that not all of LA County was impacted like they said originally. A horrible experience all around. We ended up at the Holiday Inn Express on Newport Beach for a fraction of the cost, with a breakfast included, and loved every minute of it.
