Super overrated and very expensive

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Jun 2024via mobile
People have been telling me for years that I simply must do GWL as it is an incredible experience.
Incredibly expensive? Yes
Incredibly fun? Meh.
Allow me to break things down:
* If you've never been before, it's a "resort." I use the quotation marks because resorts typically are all inclusive. This one is not, and literally everything you do costs extra money, including parking.
* There's a water park downstairs. It has stupid hours and closes at 8 PM each night, way too early. Should be open til 10 like every other pool at every other resort. Even Disney pools are open until 11 or midnight. Because it closes stupidly early, all the kids will be running feral around the resort after 8 PM, and you won't be able to do anything else due to hoards of unsupervised children. There's another pool or patio that was closed the entire week we were there. Then there's an additional outside pool and play area that closes even more stupidly early, around 5 or 6 PM, even though it doesn't get dark until 9.
Dumb.
* There are lifeguards, but they stand around talking and not really guarding anything, so try to watch other people's kids too. It's not safe.
* They make it seem like there's lots of dining options, but there aren't because they all have stupid hours, too. Dunkin closes at 2 each day--- and the employees there were super rude--- the dinner buffet only runs on certain days of the week, the pizza place was always out of half the stuff on the menu, and the wait at the bakery/ice cream place was always ridiculous.
* They have MagiQuest, which we've played in other places, and it's actually pretty fun. It's like a live action role play. You run around and use a magic want and cast it at items to complete quests. But every other place we've played, it's all on the same floor. Here? It's spread allllll over the resort. On multiple floors! They even have items in hallways upstairs where the rooms are! So basically you have unsupervised kids with magic wands CONSTANTLY running full speed up and down the stairs, down the hallways in between rooms where people are sleeping, and playing on the elevators so they can finish quests. I cannot understand what GWL was thinking with this one. You WANT unsupervised kids running up and down stairs and playing in your elevators? Sounds like a great opportunity for injury and liability issues but ok.
* There's an arcade but it's pretty small
* We never got to use bowling. It's not a real bowling alley. It's 6 or 8 lanes of virtual bowling, basically ski ball, and the wait was over an hour.
* There is golf but it was always too crowded as well.
* We did build a bear
* Overall the resort is very run down and wasn't Incredibly clean for as much as they charge

Tl;dr? It's very expensive and very crowded. Just be prepared and try to go with the flow. Your kids will probably have a blast. You'll probably need a few drinks.

We got our money's worth out of the water park, but wish there was a day care for date night. I noticed many hidden fees that we weren't expecting. I also was told we had a credit by an employee, but chatted with another employee and they said other wise. It would be nice if the lodge offered "swim time" for guests staying in the lodge. Better hygiene rules for the pool would make a lot of improvement. The rooms and water park need maintenance.

The good news. The staff and housekeeping are great! Anytime I contacted them, they responded quickly. Kelsee the bartender was very kind.

Room tip: Save your money for the food! Wish the offered rooms with a kitchen.

TripAdvisor community,
I am devastated by the experience my family and I had at the Great Wolf Lodge. Our stay, meant to be a celebration for my autistic daughter's birthday, turned into a nightmare. The staff mishandled our room, showed disrespect, and cancelled our reservation without consent. They discarded our belongings, including my daughter's birthday cake. Despite my attempts for resolution, the lodge ignored us. This experience deeply hurt my daughter and our family. I urge the Yelp community to reconsider supporting a business that treats its customers with such callousness. Avoid the Great Wolf Lodge to spare others from a similar ordeal.

-A Devastated Parent

There is so much rust and mold throughout the water park. I can’t believe this place is still able to stay open. Someone is going to seriously get sick. This place needs to close and deep clean. We are not looking forward to coming back to the water park tomorrow. Good thing I only booked one night.

We stayed in GWL in Anaheim because we were trying to give our children an awesome experience with GWL and Disneyland, so we stayed here first and it was awful, we had 13 people, and 3 rooms, one of our daughters was on the 6th floor in the back of the hotel, and our other family members were on the first next to each other, and upon checking out, we had food charges of places we did not eat, we had the buffet breakfast and food in the cabana, they had us charged with the small eateries we did not eat at??? Upon checking out it took the front desk 2 hours to settle our bill, and we felt okay about it, but we have since talked to GWL who informed us that one of the rooms owed money, the other rooms had credit....I love the GWL in grand mound, we have never had this experience??? also the wave pool is so small and the dance floor is super small, it was not a nice visit, and we are still fighting for our incidental holds???

Room tip: Don't book this hotel, find another location.

What an amazing place ! This is our first time here, and we LOVED our stay here. The rooms are very nice, the beds are comfortable, and the whole area is kids friendly. To my opinion, for kids 6 years old and above, it is literally HEAVEN!
My grandkids are younger : 1- 3 years old, and they also had fun.
The service was outstanding: I had a problem with the AC, and they came to fix it within 5 min .
