Review of Rustig

Reviewed 2 May 2018 via mobile

We have regularly been visiting Rustig over the last 3 years and were disappointed to see the deterioration in the quality of the service we received. They have drastically cut their staff compliment and as a result the braais are not cleaned, bins not emptied, bathrooms not serviced. Little add ons which used to be so lovely have been done away with like being able to purchase ice and ice creams. The restaurant is also closed... apparently for renovations... without giving notice to any of their visitors. Not sure we will be back, which would be super sad as it is a wonderful place for children and adults alike and has amazing hiking.

We opted for the 13km Karee trail and completed it in one day. It took us about 7 hours to complete, and we did get lost in the last bit, but that is purely due to being so amazed by the scenery, that we didn't concentrate on the path. Had good cellphone reception most of the time, so it was easy to be navigated back on route when we phoned the lodge to help us out. Very helpful staff.

Did get caught up in a rainstorm, no shelter available when you are on top of the mountain, however, due to it being a warm day it was a welcome rain shower.

Will do this hiking trail again without a doubt. Challenging climbs and descents after the first 5km, but well worth it.

Rustig has a great 5km hiking trail with breathtaking views of the surrounds. We have previously hiked here and thoroughly enjoyed it. For our most recent stay we booked the 10 sleeper farm house for our group and though the natural beauty in the area is lovely, the accommodation left much to be desired. The house lacked attention to detail and seemed to be in a state of neglect - two cupboard doors were broken and hanging from the hinges, the towel hook in the bathroom hung off centre, furniture was broken/in a state of neglect, the sofa on the stoep was filthy (we had to throw a blanket over it just to sit on it). Many kitchen implements were missing i.e. bottle opener, bread knife, salad spoons, serving spoons. For a house that was billed as being inclusive of cutlery and crockery this should be standard. The cleanliness of the house was also in question - there was a persistent odour of old cooking grease in the kitchen. We found an unwashed greasy oven dish in the oven, and a dirty pot with liquid in it in the cupboard.

The staff were friendly and obliging, but one get the feeling that the owners/management don't keep an eye on quality standards. My recommendation - go for the hiking - don't stay for the accommodation.

We completed the 5km hike at Rustig - a lovely hike with enough adventure to keep it interesting. Rustig offers various hiking trails with differing lengths, depending on your preference.

The scenery along the way is breath-taking and the trail is well marked and maintained. Rustig offers both overnight accommodation and day visitor facilities. You can pack your swimming costume and picnic food for after the hike.

As always, pack sunscreen, snacks and enough water for the hike as it can get hot depending on the weather.

Definitely a place worth visiting - whether for a hike or just a lazy day around the swimming pool

Rustig's 13KM Karee hike is one of the most intense hikes I've done to date. its long and vigorous. Entrance is R75 per adult, there is a swimming pool and accommodation. The views are break-taking, the route is rough and has lots of stones! - Have proper hiking shoes for this one.
