This has to be one of the best hotels that we have stayed in and the team that run it are incredible. The staff introduce themselves to you, shake your hand, welcome you like the mean it and seem to have a sixth sense such that they know when you want a coffee.

The food is fantastic, we were there two nights and the dinner menu changed both nights. You don’t have to book a table or a time, just sit down when you want and you will be some of the finest food you can eat. The choice of wines to go with you meal is extensive and included in the price, but if you want to buy that special bottle then they have that covered too with knowledgable staff that can help with the choice.

Lunch is tapas plates with options for all palettes all freshly prepared so that you can eat as much or as little as you want. Breakfast is one of the best we have eaten, from the home made musli to the cooked options... all are great.

We only stayed for two nights, and regret not staying longer. There is more to do in the area than we thought, with the hotel only happy to organise excursions and drive you to them. One thing not to miss is the cliff walk to Hermanus. This is a nice 3 mile walk that can take an hour or two, if you are lucky enough to spot some whales like we did. When you get to Hermanus, if you don’t fancy the walk back, just pop into Marine Hotel and they will call Birkenhead House who will come and pick you up.

One point to note is that the pools aren’t heated so if you are visiting in the whale watching season I would expect them to be a bit cold.

Buildings don’t make great hotels, the people running it do and make no mistake this is a great hotel. Definitely worth a detour and we are already planning to return.

This hotel is just amazing. The view is gorgeous, the staff is very professional, the kitchen is good and the wine selection is spot on. The Hotel was one of the most expensive hotels on our trip through SA but absolutely worth every penny. You should not forget that everything is included. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. At lunch we had Tapas, excellent. In the evening I had a Filet, also very tasty. The bar is well equipped. The house wines that are included are very good. We had a Pinotage and a Shiraz from Rickety Bridge. Very good wine. We also did our laundry there which is kind of nice if you come home and still got clothes that you do not need wash - nice add-on. What I have never experienced before is that the hotel washes my car. That was crazy. My rental car - a Fortuner looked amazing after that wash :-). Nothing you really need but again nice to have. But what makes up for the price is the view from the terrace over the Indian Ocean, that makes up for everything. You can not put a price tag on that. Whenever my wife and I sat outside we were like in a dream. The sound of the ocean - so beautiful up there. And during soaking in the view you sip on a good drink/wine/cocktail that is included in your price. We had Standard room from where you had no view over the ocean - they are the cheapest ones. But it is really just the view that makes those rooms a little bit cheaper, the interiror design is wonderful and the marble bathroom is one of its kind. I loved it. Have a look at the website, the pictures there do not lie. I also did enjoy this beautiful village: Hermanus. It is a lovely place, very clean, lovely architecture and just an amazing coastline with a great path from where you can watch wales during walking along. That is something very special. We are sure - even though we have to save up for this place, we come back! And when we were leaving this great location, Zolani & Kerstin came out waving us goodbye until they could not see us anymore. It felt like leaving good friends behind. Thank you for an awesome 10th anniversary experience to the staff of Birkenhead House who made our stay memorable. This Hotel should be on the bucket list. I need to show this place to my parents, my brother and best friends :-).

Sometimes when you spend a lot of money for a hotel room you don't always get what you are paying for. BIrkenhead House DELIVERS! We have never had so much attention and quality at any place we have ever stayed. The food was fantastic, the views exceptional, the staff amazing. If we ever go back to South Africa we will come back to this hotel. We could not have been more impressed with every aspect of this hotel. It is a MUST to stay in Hermanus if in Cape Town. Don't waste your time on a day trip come and enjoy at least 1 night but recommend 2. Our room was #3 and it truly was over-the-top. The Birkenhead House was magical.

Possibly the best hotel experience I've ever had. Stayed here on honeymoon. While the rooms are not as over-the-top as some of the other Royal Portfolio hotels, the vibe here made it our favorite stay. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning, and the views breathtaking. Given it's small size, evenings at Birkenhead feel almost like a dinner party; we spent nights drinking wine and chatting with other guests in the living room after dinner, while taking in the powerful coastal views. Food was best of any hotel or restaurant we tried in South Africa - the chef here is absolutely phenomenal, which I found interesting considering the full-board status. The staff was phenomenal: Wes,Emile, Gcobisa, Chris, Fortune, Sandile, and many others always made us feel at home. I truly hope I am fortunate enough to visit this hotel again in the future.
