Having stayed at the Royal Portfolio's Royal Malewane Safari Lodge with such success, we followed on to Hermanus to stay at their Sea-side effort. Approaching it, you wouldn't even know it was a hotel, as it sits anonymously in a residential area just outside the Town, looking as if it was just another house, which to be honest, lacks a sense of occasion.

The lack of specialness on the outside is not matched on the inside. With only 11 rooms but endless staff, the hotel has a very top end Relais Chateaux feel, about it, offering lovely rooms and fabulous food. Its most outstanding feature by far, is the breakfast and lunch terrace that sits at the top of the rock face, overlooking the beach and the lovely coastline, accompanied by the soothing yet exhilarating beat of the crashing waves and the glorious sun rises and sun sets.

You learn to relax into the hotel's amenities. We didn't use the Spa, but it has 2 smallish pools, nice walks along the rock face and an all inclusive (drinks as well) meal package and simply first class smiling service. We were there for New Years Eve and the hotel had a great Firework Display for its guests and the many hundreds of locals who come to watch from the beach below. I booked too late to get an Ocean View room, but if you can, I am sure it would be worth the extra, not that our room was in any way disappointing.

Ultra modern art hotel where the staff wear white during the day and black at night. Cliff top location superb, staff attitude brilliant, service quality outstanding, food brilliant. Sure it costs a bit, but how much do you pay for a slice of heaven. Did we like this place? Sure did.
We had a discussion as to was this the best ever and decided on top 3. Two Japanese Ryokans were its equal. We are now looking for excuses to return and stay longer.
From the friendly greeting through to the ultra comfortable beds this was just great. Faults? Hmmmm. Yes. They allowed someone to smoke a cigar outside on the ocean view terrace. Should be a smoke free residence inside and out.
Thanks guys. We hope to see you again.... soon

Our favourite hotel is SA ! Views of the ocean whale watching from the pool with exceptional food , drinks and service. Very romantic with individual quirky rooms which are laden with flowers and chocolates each night.

We stay about 100 nights a year in all types of hotel all over the world.

5Star in South Africa is not the same as 5 Star in New York or London all though there are some world class 5 star hotels in South Africa

Birkenhead is about as good as I have experienced anywhere in the world when it comes to small boutique hotels. I have stayed at many including longitude 131, L’orologio, Nakamanda, etc . It’s really a matter of personal choice as to what you prefer

There is one thing that makes a great hotel apart from others , it’s not what they do that is right you are judged by what you do that is right and Birkenhead ensure that there is absolutely nothing that is not right , they just keep exceeding your expectations . Hotels like Birkenhead raises the bar so high that very few can follow

When you judge a hotel you have to consider the environment and location you are in , certainly South Africa has its challenges with regards to training staff and a lot of hotels just can’t get the edge that the Far East has with regards to service but Birkenhead manage that very well you are pampered 24/7 , they even wash your car

Room tip: room 9 has almost 360 degree views

Forget the fact this 6* quality Hotel / Beach House sits on the edge of the sea and commands the most perfect views of whales, seals, mountains and waves

Forget the fact the the food is exquisite and delivered with such skill

Forget the chef and his team attends to all 22 guests ( Max ) needs with such precision and food taste. The changing menu daily is just stunning both in choice and execution

Forget the rooms are all individual and decorated with such style. It goes without saying its so beautifully presented ( thank you housekeeping )

Forget the fact that from the minute you arrive you get the feeling that NOTHIING is too much trouble, you feel like its a home for your stay

Forget the fact that the General Manager Shane here has built the most superb team of people and himself exudes care and the will to make sure everything is perfect

Forget that absolutely nothing is too much trouble for anybody

Forget the fact that a mild illness for my husband when he arrived had Team Birkenhead heading especially to the pharmacy for his needs without question and with such care

Forget the fact that the service you receive is pitched so perfectly for everyone. We can see the fact that guests are all given the service that their requirements need, everything seems tailored

Forget the attention to detail with all the eclectic beautiful furnishings throughout the property

Forget the fact that there is never a rush or shortage of places to sit and enjoy whatever you wish, sun, quiet, food, a drink etc etc

Forget the fantastic wine and cocktail list all inclusive all day ( in fact theres no need for a cocktail list they will just make what your request )

Forget the fact that breakfast lunch and dinner times START at whenever anybody wants to start and FINISHES when everybody has finished

Forget the terrace with views over the ocean where you can sit, drink, eat, wave watch, seal watch etc

Forget the flower arrangements and designs around the property, truly stunning.

Forget the fact that every member of staff knows your name and looks out for your needs

Forget housekeeping took a shirt and trousers from us after asking for an ironing board and delivered them back 5 mins later perfectly ironed with no quibble or cost

Forget the fact the all the customers here are so nice and thats down to the fact that you can't help but be calm here

Forget the fact that I've forgotten all the things I've haven't forgotten because this place will be etched in our minds and hearts forever. How such standards of personal attention are consistently delivered here is a lesson to other establishments. If I was looking to understand, watch and learn how the BEST hospitality is delivered I would want a lesson here.

I am 55 I have stayed & eaten in reputedly the best hotels and accommodation in the world. I know people say that and its relative BUT its a honour to have stayed here.

Birkenhead have a video presentation on their website and we watched it before booking, we took it all with a pinch of salt BUT let me just say that everything Shane the manager and owners mention in the short few minute summary of Birkenhead House is true! They deliver what they promise!

David and I want to extend personally ( and we've never done this on Tripadvisor before ) our thanks to Team Birkenhead ..... hats off to perfection ( although I get the feeling thud never feel they had ever reached that ) and of course we will be back for a longer stay.

Room tip: The room wouldn't matter here as the whole house is your room and its stunning
