Tree lodge is in a lovely, quiet location with wildlife nearby. On the way into the lodge from the gate we saw giraffes!

My room was cozy and I loved the wide door to the patio. I opened it and the side windows up at night and felt like I was sleeping under the stars. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom while, not luxurious, was clean and adequate. I could sit on my deck and watch the Nyala foraging at night and frolicking in the morning. With a short walk you can also visit the two ostriches that are full of personality that live on-site as well as the crocodiles that live just off the lodge.

The lodge was nice with a lovely fire place to warm by and the food was refreshing and full of choices.

Our guide, Alan, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we saw 19 rhinos in one morning. I only spent a short time at Tree Lodge but revisit in a heart beat.

It was raining when we arrived and the thick Zululand clay stuck to everything. From the carpark to the rooms, no getting away from it. Friendly staff reception. Main areas need a bit of a scrub (feels like) with the the furniture stained by the red dust/mud. Rooms quite eerie in the beginning but lovely to sleep in after you are used to the glass front. Bathrooms seriously need to be upgraded.
Good food, from the high tea through dinner to breakfast. Nice and plentiful as well.
Lighting in the dining area needs attention with at least 5 lights out during dinner making our little corner of the restaurant very dark.
Game drive into Hluhluwe was quite good but ranger difficult to understand (especially for my Australian guests.

Room tip: Try and get rooms closer to the main building especially if the weather is inclement. Can be a far walk.

The treehouse accommodations at Zululand are a perfect way to enjoy safari in South Africa! Remarkably (and I mean REMARKABLY) well priced, super fun (is that a monkey on my deck!?!?) and with just enough comfort to make "roughing it" in the bush an awful lot of fun! Don't expect over the top luxury or white-glove amenities - but you can count on warm service, great food and amazing wildlife (there's a giraffe who really enjoys hanging out with guests right near the lounge). I can't imagine any safari lodge offering more value for the dollar (or South African Rand, as the case may be).

Room tip: Treehouses nearer the main lodge have a LOT of monkeys waiting to make your acquaintance!

We stayed at the Zululand Tree Lodge in order to visit the Hluhluwe and Umfolozi game reserve. We prefer to drive ourselves when visiting National reserves, and with the Tree lodge being less than 10min from the reserve it served our needs perfectly.

The rooms are beautiful, situated almost in the treetops. The shower is great ( good water pressure, with lots of hot water.) The bed was very comfortable and there is plenty of storage. We also enjoyed the private and spacious balcony.

The units at the Tree lodge is not self catering, so my only negative comments are not really applicable to most travelers: The fridge did not cool anything down, and should be replaced. The lodge management should also keep in mind that some visitors will eat their main meals at the reserve (see my separate review of the Hluhluwe Umfolozi reserve), and will therefor just want to snack in the evenings. Some plates, cutlery and wine glasses will go a long way to make the unit more comfortable. A small table and chairs on the balcony will also be great. The refrigerator must have ice!!!

We only had breakfast on the last day of our stay, as breakfast is only served from 7am, and the reserve's gates open at 6am. As mentioned above: maybe have muesli and yogurt in the room for guests who would like to leave early. The breakfast was very good, with a great selection for almost all tastes. Fresh fruit juice was missing tough. ( They only had that horrible fake stuff.) The coffee could also be improved. Either get a espresso machine, or offer plunger / french press coffee; 1980's over-brewed filter coffee does not cut the grade.

Another disappointment was dinner. In the five nights we stayed there, not one night was there a "braai" (barbecue) in the lapa around the fire. This is a absolute must for a game lodge, and serving virtually the same old fashioned buffet every night get's tired very quickly. The wine list with half of the wines crossed out, was also a disappointment. When will hotels in SA realize that travlers have money to spend on good wine? ;)

Otherwise, good value and friendly staff.

Room tip: Take one of the rooms away from the restaurant, it's quite a walk, but quieter.

I've just returned from a 12 nights stay of this amazing Lodge Don't stay only for 2 or 3 nights. There is so much to see and disvover not only at the near Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park which is amazing with its wonderful landscape and the Big5. The morning game drives guided by Sipho and Alan were wonderful. But the reserve where you are stay in has such a lot to offer. You are sitting on your own terrace, watching the animals around. You can walk through the reserve and see the animals so close. The staff could not be nicer. They are always looking after you and make you feel so special. The food is served in buffet style and is very tasty. WIFI is free of charge and works excellent close to the reception, bar and restaurant. This was my 4th visit to South Africa in this region and I will return soon to the Tree Lodge as I cannot imagine to stay at other place after this great experience.
