Our biker group decided on going for a long winter's ride through the mountains. We started at the Wimpy in Margate on the South coast. As we approached the mountains we got this rush of pure bliss, fresh cold winter air and beautiful scenery. Vast fields of trees and natural woodland growth. Raptors in the open blue sky above us. Mountains of rock resembling castles. These mountains are a must see. The road was tarred and in good condition. Few potholes. It was just breathtaking. Little farmstalls along the road and places for a brunch or filling up your tummy.

The Drakensberg mountain area is a world heritage site and is always pleasant to visit. There are a large number of rock painting sites and some are relatively easy to access. The environment is pleasant, with streams and forests and wildlife. The baboons are however becoming a problem in some areas.

We traveled the Central Drakensberg area in Natal midlands extensively. Starting at the parking place at Monk's Cowl, we went for a 5h hike, passing the sphinx and the keartland pass. The tour was strenous. Make sure to carry some water and some snacks with you. Depending on the rainfall the weeks before, you will be able to fill your water bottle with fresh creek water on the way - delicious. When you plan your tour, do not forget that the parking place at Monk's Cowl closes at 6 pm. We enjoyed our tour. However, one baboon did not like our presence, but we did not have to argue with him. Compared to him, a chameleon was a rather quiet hike companion. Enjoy!

I cannot get enough of these mountains! They keep on mesmerizing me changing continuously as the weather changes! There are so much to do from sanctuary visits to water sports, from arts and crafts to food founds! I will keep on visiting this area which stretches over a large area
