Owner description: This park contains 11 different ecological habitats and is a sanctuary for nesting sea turtles. Situated on the Northern Caribbean side of Costa Rica, in the province of Limon, it is approximately 90 miles northeast of the capital city of San José. Accessible only by air or water, Tortuguero is the most important nesting site in the entire western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle. It is known as “Tico Amazon” (Costa Rican Amazon) due to the fact that in Tortuguero there are no roads; the principle means of transportation being the dozens of fresh water canals throughout the park.

We enjoyed taking a canoe tour from Costa Rica Roots tours, and stayed at La Baula lodge where we could hear wildlife sounds at night.

the national park is accessed by boat and passengers remain in the boats during their tour of the park. the best time to see animals is early morning and late afternoon.
one really needs a skilled guide and driver to spot the many animals who hide well and would be missed by amateur eyes.

We had a fabulous early morning visit to the park.
Our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
We would have revisited if there had been time to see the waterways at a different time of day.
A must if we visit again.

What a fantastic place! It was like travelling back in time, the only indication of human hqbitation was the boat we were in. We saw so many different species of birds, monkeys, reptiles, mammals and amphibians; it will take weeks to process our photogrqphs. If you have the opportunity just go, you won't regret it.
