Be it a sunny sweltering afternoon, a cool breezy winter or a rainy monsoon; we all somehow love that refreshing glass of cold sugary falooda. But little do we know the history of this loved beverage that we all so desire.

It all started with the Parsi’s who came down to Gujarat from Persia. Initially the king of Gujarat denied them entry, but the Parsi’s offered something that was so unique that the king was overwhelmed and he accepted their entry in the sovereign lands of India. The simplest commodity sugar was dissolved in milk by the Parsi’s and was served to the king. And the rest is all history. I guess mumbai holds a certain heritage because of the culture nurtured by the Parsi’s. Be it the famous Irani chai or the bun Muska, berry pulav or dhansak and for that matter of fact even the “Falooda”. Yes the Parsi’s were the first to invent this dessert.

Falooda or faloodeh (as called in the ancient Persian land) is a cold dessert usually made from rose syrup, vermicelli, milk, sweet basil and topped with a scoop of Icecream. But initially falooda wasn’t welcomed by the Indians as no one knew what it exactly was. Badshah Cold Drinks started selling falooda in 1905. Back then they faced many difficulties selling this product as people were afraid to eat a pink drink with noodles and strange seeds in it. But badshah had a plan. He made his family members stand outside the shop and drink the falooda through out the day. Eventually the curious nature of an Indian couldn’t resist but try the new special drink. And it’s been 113 years now that the same pink rose falooda is served and relished by everyone.

So next time you plan to shop around Crawford market, do visit this outlet. I am sure this century old place won’t disappoint you.

If you aren’t a falooda person, then you can definitely try out their Pav bhaji. Damn they make some awesome lip smacking bhaji.

Well that’s all folks. I hope you enjoyed reading my review. Do let me know how your experience was when you visit this place.

Till then adios people, happy munching. :)

Badshah is my favourite restaurant in Mumbai for Falooda and even for good wholesome food. It is always full of guests, but luckily has lot of tables. The variety is very large, food very tasty, and the faloodas are simply too delicious.
