Updated 2024 Review

Review of Hotel Podstine
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Jul 2024via mobile
My husband and I enjoyed our stay 2 years ago so we decided to return again for a few nights. Our room was nice and spacious. The best part of this hotel is the outside views. It’s nice to sit outside with a glass of wine after dinner. The breakfast is still very good and there are plenty of options. The prices for their lunch/dinner menu are entirely too high. I was also stopped by a staff member for bringing my own drink because “they sell food and drinks here.” This was another change from our last visit. It’s understandable, BUT if you want people to buy beer, soda, water, and food at the hotel, guests should receive a discount of some sort. Overall, we still enjoyed staying here and would recommend it to other travelers.

Hvar is a hilly, party-focused town that can be noisy. However, the Podstine Hotel offers a more peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. The hotel comes with a private beach, though it lacks sandy beaches typical of the region. Just note the rest of Hvar charges €40 per day to use a beach sun lounger, so it's a massive bonus to have a private beach.

Our superior room had sea views, though the room was slightly dated despite being large and very clean. The view was partially blocked by a palm tree, and the large balcony went largely unused. Temperatures are currently over 30°C/90°F in this area.

Breakfast was excellent, with a wide selection including coffee, smoked salmon, eggs, and various other foods.

There have been previous reviews complaining about the distance from the town center. Hvar is quite hilly, so getting around requires some effort. Walking to the town takes around 25 minutes along the waterfront path which is lit at night, or 15 minutes by road. Taxis cost approximately €20.

In summary, Podstine offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere compared to the lively town, but it does require more walking. The tradeoff is the ability to enjoy Hvar's culinary delights and a peaceful night's sleep away from the bustling town center. The hotel's service has been excellent, with staff consistently delivering drinks to guests on the beach sun loungers.

    We have loved this stay

We loved this place, the outdoor spaces are brilliant and the food is good. Lovely little pool for cooling off, plus direct access to swim in the sea. Loads of spaces to relax in the sun, and some in the shade too. A bar near the seafront is useful too. Evening meals were delicious and there was loads of choice at breakfast. Can also order (paid for) food and snacks throughout the day. Pleasant and helpful staff.
Easy 20min walk into town if wanted, but to be honest it was nice to be away from the hubbub of central Hvar especially on really hot days

Sure, the interior decor isn’t very up to date and some aspects of the rooms could do with modernisation, but we weren’t there to lounge around indoors all day. Bed perfectly comfortable and staff happy to assist with anything e.g when housekeeping didn’t leave any towels!

I was nervous about some of the recent negative reviews and was prepared to be critical, but honestly, we loved this hotel. It exceeded/met expectations. All staff were exceptionally friendly. Plenty of options for breakfast service - all meals we had (lunch most days & dinner once) were very good. The best part of this hotel is the location and outdoor space. We would stay here for outdoor space over staying in the harbor area. The ladder to climb down to the water is perfect. Great swimming. Plenty of loungers & service. Pool is small but you don’t need much when you have the sea. Hotel very clean. Spa reasonably priced. Only small negatives- agree with other comments that rooms could use a little updating. They are not bad at all….but could use some art, etc on the wall. Our phone didn’t work initially but they fixed it immediately. Regarding rooms, I am to loved that the curtains were essentially blackout curtains. Helpful on days you want to sleep in a little. 100% would stay again.

Lovely hotel in great location BUT don’t stay in room 217 - there is a very noisy creature living in the wardrobe/ceiling !
Can’t upload video but it was loud!

Management couldn’t find it - were offered an alternative room by hotel entrance which was not a twin ( sharing with daughter) and late night revellers could be heard at all times of night and day - so no better!

Disappointed no discount offered for our considerable inconvenience of disrupted sleep - we were in an economy room but paid same price as my friend in room next door who had no creature problems- even a token bottle of wine would have been appreciated and show better hospitality management….

I know it is expected to find different creatures/flora/fauna in warmer climates - but not in living in your hotel room!

    Room tip: Avoid room 217!

The best thing about Podstine hotel has got to be its outside spaces. It’s right up on a hill so gives you spectacular views. There’s a small pool and their own private bay with sunbeds provided and it was all so picturesque and peaceful. It didn’t feel crowded there and we were always able to get a space.
The staff were all super friendly and helpful, lots of smiles and they always said hello as you walk by.
The breakfast was also great. Loads of choice! Particularly liked that they had crepes with real Nutella, several types of cooked eggs and sausages, and plenty of fruit. You can eat your breakfast outside looking over the amazing view of the sea.
The room was ok. We didn’t get a room with a balcony and we regretted that. The wet towels etc. hanging in the bathroom gave off a bad damp smell, and we had a very small window facing a wall, so even in the daytime the room was very dark. One of the light switches was broken so we had the choice of the room being extremely brightly lit, or very dimly lit by a lamp on a side table. There was no real happy medium. The decor in the room could do with updating and it needs some touch ups. The shower had good water pressure but it was all just a bit dank and tired.

The bed was comfortable though, and the size of the room was good. I would return to this hotel, as long as I had a room with a balcony!

It’s about a 15 minute walk to the centre - walking to the hotel from the port is doable (I managed it!) but not super easy with big suitcases as it is very uphill in some areas.
