This tiny guest house is an absolute jem. It is located in Shuhe which is about a 10 minute taxi ride outside Lijiang, and as such, has none of the loud bar music that people say plagues the old centre of Lijiang at night.
The building is of traditional chinese architecture and dates back hundreds of years, and oozes character and charm. In fact the whole village is of similar style, and is just beautiful.
We stayed for 2 nights in the family rooms which consisted of 2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms and a small living space in between. It was accessed up a small rickety staircase, and accross another living room which was partially open to the elements. We could have used it as our space if we wanted, but you can't lock it when you go out.
The house is built around a courtyard and we overlooked it from the rooms - it is a picture postcard view.
The beds were very clean and comfortable - sheets and towels were plain white and looked new. Also, the beds had electric blankets which we needed as it was quite chilly at night. The bathrooms were spotlessly clean, and there was plenty of hot water to shower.
Breakfast was included in the very reasonable room rates - we had to walk around the corner to another architectural gem where we sat enjoying another fantastic view while enjoying noodles and fried eggs!
I highly recommend this place - we had a little bit of difficulty communicating with the staff at times because we only speak a tiny bit of mandarin - but that in no way spoilt our experience. We booked a car to pick us up from Lijiang airport and the driver held up his sign with our name - written in chinese characters - that threw us for a while - we found him by a process of elimination! Despite that, I can't recommend this place highly enough.
