We were staying in Birmingham one night, a Tuesday evening, and called Gianmarcos 3 times for a reservation. No one answered the phone, so we got in the car and drove to the restaurant. The parking lot was packed, but we wandered inside, only to be told they had no tables available. I advised that we had tried to call, but no one answered the phone, and they apologized and could not have been nicer about trying to accomodate us. They guided us to the charming wine bar in the rear of the restaurant, and there were two stools unclaimed at the bar. We ordered a bottle of wine, which the bartender JB recommended, and it was amazing. We ordered dinner, and it was amazing. JB brought us the most amazing caprese, shrimp appetizer knowing that we were hungry and that our experience at the restaurant had not started well. We will stop here for dinner every time we travel through Birmingham. Gourmet food, wonderful service in a laid back, very comfortable environment.

Someone has to be the best italian and I believe we found it this week at Gianmarco's.
The entrees were superb and the service could not have been better. Add in a great atmosphere and you have a restaurant where we will return many, many times.

My wife and daughter ate here last night and i was absolutely stunned at what a great meal i had. After a big rain, it had cooled off so we had dinner on the porch outside the wine bar behind the restaurant. We picked out two wines and brought them to our table at very reasonable prices. My daughter , who is local, said don't even look at the menu. The specials are outstanding. Following her lead, my wife had the stuffed chicken , daughter had the rib eye and i had spectacular soft shelled crab on a risotto over gumbo. Wow!

While not much to see from the outside, this is a hidden treasure. We arrived without a reservation but before the dinner rush. HINT - make a reservation, we got really lucky! The main dining room was all reserved so they showed us to the wine room. The gentleman there took great care of us making sure we had wine and could browse the wines while waiting for a seat. After just a short wait, they escorted us to the bar. Once we arrived we were greeted by a friendly bartender who really helped make this evening special.

Everything we had was spectacular! We started with the absolutely amazing Fiocchi pasta purses stuffed with pears, Gorgonzola, and walnuts. 3 of us shared, it was just enough to start but not to fill. The pasta was tender and very tasty. The filling was a well developed blend of flavors and texture. It was just delicious! There’s a light and tasty sage butter over the pasta. Overall, a wonderful appetizer.

For entrees we tried: the meatball and sausage; the ribeye; and the lasagna. All received rave reviews! The rib eye was cooked and seasoned just right. It was a good size piece and presented on a wooden tray (very nice). Along side the steak was their Mac and cheese. Not sure if it’s a signature dish, but it should be. It’s a grown up version with sophisticated layered flavors resulting from a cheese blend. Try this! The lasagna was magnificent. A very traditional Italian dish. Hand made pasta and a savory sauce with a great mix of cheeses. The meatball (very big) and sausage served with a great spaghetti. Flavored and seasoned well, both were a hit.

For dessert, we shared the chocolate chip cookie. Served in a skillet, it was a great end to the meal. Highly recommend trying this.

Great place for authentic Italian cuisine. The meals are decadent and flavorful. Great wine list. We have eaten here many times. Call for reservations. This place is always busy but the wait is definitely worth it. Sometimes you can steal a seat on the bar area but I highly recommend waiting for a seat in the dining room where the atmosphere is wonderful and you can watch the meals being prepared in the open kitchen.

Great restaurant for a romantic dinner.
