I have been to the Hotel Manaos four times now. The Hotel is clean, the rooms are clean and well furnished. The beds are soft but firm, the television is big and has a few English speaking channels. The bathrooms are tiled with the shower more than adequately sized. There is a safe in each room for valuables and a closet to hang clothes. The air conditioning is very good with a remote.
It is situated right across the street to the world famous Amazon Opera House and many examples of colonial architecture. There are restaurants, grocery stores within very easy walking distance and it is a reasonable walk to the port/wharf area.
The staff is extremely attentive and very pleasant. Breakfast in the morning is a very pleasant surprise. There is coffee with hot milk, two or three different types of juices from fruits in the region, small breads, cheese and ham, fried yucca (delicious) papaya halves, bananas, yogurt, all kinds of little sandwiches, regional cheeses and a heated tray with eggs and cut up pieces of salsicha (which sure look like hot dogs to me) :) Anyway, the breakfast is ample and free and it is easy to load up and sustain yourself for quite a while.
By international standards it is not a five star hotel but it certainly makes a good argument for a four star in terms of service, safety, cleanliness, value for your money, and location location location.
