The Haitian Hotel is a large hotel with adequately furnished rooms. I got the impression that it is well-managed but is not ready for tourists.
We arrived at 20:40 and the 2 restaurants had already closed.
The lobby has no English, the restaurants even less.
The breakfast menu offers Chinese dishes only.
I have to say that everyone was extremely friendly and helpful but communication was hopeless.

I stayed one night in this hotel and was very pleased.
The modern room was extremely clean, but warm cozy and quiet with exactly what you need for a comfortable stay and good nights sleep. All electronic and technical appliances worked perfectly, which was not the case in other hotels I stayed in in China.
The staff was very friendly and helpful in-spite of their limited English knowledge- which was more than in other hotels in China in which the staff did not speak English at all. The hotel is located near the new downtown area.

We were very happy with our choice of accommodation in Kunming, we booked it based on the good reviews in here, and were not disappointed. Check in was handled efficiently, our room was on the 9th floor, and was beautifully appointed. Nice bed, great bathroom facilities and very cozy and quiet. Free and very fast LAN internet offered in each room. Fresh fruits every day delivered to your room, as well as newspaper (Chinese only). The bathroom is designed to give you the option of seeing through, although you can use the curtain provided to block it, we find that amusing. The only down side was the dismal selection of breakfast, most choices are Chinese, with very little Western choice, not even eggs! Kunming is building underground train at the moment, there will be a station right near the hotel. It was worthy to mention the friendly and helpful door man, always ready to asset us with getting a taxi. This hotel is about 10 min walking to the city centre.
We had originally planned to travel to Chengdu but since the earthquake happened (May 2008), we had to change our plans to Kunming at the last minute. Booked this hotel upon walk in and got a discounted rate for a double twin room for 300Y/night. I honestly wasn't expecting much since we were only staying for 3 nights and the price was cheap, but I was pleased by the convenient location of the hotel (close to central business area with lots of shops and restaurants, across the street is a hip joint called The Camel Bar and an Internet Bar), the cleanliness of the hotel (comfy pillows and comforters, a few stains on the carpet but nothing too bad), and the surprisingly tasty spread of the complimentary breakfast buffet. The breakfast buffet is mostly Chinese style with a few western options, but food is tasty and there are always two chefs on hand to make noodles/dumplings to order.
There was one little glitch in our otherwise pleasant stay: after the first night, the front desk had accidentally un-keyed our access cards thinking that we were only staying one night when we were staying 3. A quick trip to the front desk fixed the situation.
Warning to non-Chinese speakers: staff is friendly but speaks somewhat limited English. They can do basic English for check-in and check-out, but don't expect a lot of concierge service.
Overall a great value. It felt almost like a 4-star hotel.
