I was thinking of being merciful and giving the hotel two stars, but realised there was really nothing to justify a second star.

Our first night in Green Land hotel was terrible. Our room reeked of cigarettes and there was no bathroom. Sure, there were a toilet, shower and sink, but no walls around them. The shower and sink were in the corner of the room and the toilet was separated from the rest of room by a curtain. We arrived to the hotel at 3 am, after a very much delayed flight, and they must have (correctly) figured we were too tired to complain about the awful room.

Unfortunately we had another night booked and paid for in Green Land hotel a few days later. After complaining about the first night we were upgraded for the next time. This time the bathroom was an actual room with walls and the cigarette smell was not so strong, but those were the only improvements.

Most of the lights in the room did not work, the air-conditioning did not work, the chair was broken, the wifi was useless, and the bathroom faucet was about come off at any minute. The beds in both rooms were ridiculously hard even by Chinese standards. It might have been softer to sleep on the carpeted floor, but that was not an option since the carpet was filthy.

The staff was mostly unfriendly and unable to speak English. The breakfast selection was almost exclusively Chinese with toast and corn flakes the only western breakfast items. The lobby and breakfast room were extremely crowed and loud with Chinese tour groups. Only one of the three elevators were working which meant waiting forever. Don’t even consider staying at this hotel.

We never planned to stay here, but due to a flight delay, we were in Kunming without a hotel. After trying to get a room at 2 other places and failing. We ended up at the Green Land and I am very happy we did. First off they offer a very great rate for the level of hotel it is, a bargain really. I think maybe they do last minute deals as we managed a room for about 80 Eur incl breakfast. The rooms are modern, clean and even has surround sound. The extras such as robes, toileteries and fruit in your room are wonderful. Whilst the bed is extremely hard ( but that is normal in China) and breakfast so so. The service really was top notch and why I award full stars.

They worked hard to quickly get us a room as it was late in the evening. The next day they helped us with a taxi back to the airport and went beyond to help us try and reach our hotel in Lijang. They waited with us outside until the taxi arrived as well.

I don't think many tourist show up at this hotel. But they do offer everything in English and really offer that service level that sometimes can get lost in translation. Plus great location. So if you can put up with a hard bed, soso breakfast in return for a great hotel and staff then head here for sure!

Good central location. Air Conditioner is controllable but you have to know how to set the thermostat. Good reliable WIFI available in lobby area . Breakfast buffet offers variety of choices . Airport shuttle is 25-35 RMB takes you to another hotel which is within walking distance. Bus stops are practically in front of the hotel . Close by there is a building full of restaurants of different cuisines .

Room: decent size, but the lighting is really poor! Would it hurt to increase the wattage of the light bulbs? Beds are typically hard but were clean. Air con doesn't really work- the fan does, but the thermostat doesn't. Bathrooms are on the smaller side, but the shower is large and in a separate stall. The rooms are noisy from the construction of several apartment towers next door (which appears to occur pretty much 24 hours a day)- but it is worse if you are the rear of the hotel.

Food: breakfast is of good variety for both Asian and Western cuisines. Breakfast is busy due to the large number of tour groups who stay there. Didn't try other meals than breakfast.

Location: about 20-25 minute walk to the Gold Horse/Jade Rooster archway, then to the main pedestrian shopping mall. Taxi there will only cost 8RMB. 5 minute walk to Gingko shopping mall- an upmarket department store. There is a food court on the ground floor there.

Other: staff are polite and helpful. One staff member, Sarah, speaks good English, and is happy to recommend sights to see, restaurants etc. Wifi available in lobby area only, but you can get an in-room wifi router if you ask at the desk- costs 200RMB as a refundable deposit. Smoking allowed everywhere, which is disappointing.

Overall, not bad for a Chinese hotel. Rating score between 3-4/5

The hotel is clean but it's customer service is not up to 5-star hotel standard....it took more than one hour to clean a room. It doesn't turn on the AC in spite of hot weather (28C). There is no wifi in guest rooms either.
