It is clean modern river bank and you can access next to Canton Tower. We rode the river cruise during evening to observe the city from the boat, and it added the value even more.
The view on both sides of the river is magnificent. Building on both sides of river are brightly illuminated at night, making a picturesque scenery on the boat ride.

I visited Guangzhou at the end of November for business. One of the evenings I went for a walk along the river. It was beautiful with all the lights, amazing to see all the boats lit up at night and the buildings are amazing. The walkway was clean with lots of trees and flowers and there were a lot of people running in the evening.
If I were to go back, i would like to see if I could go on a boat tour in the evening to see the city lights for a different perspective.
This river is very important in the city's history. This is one of those sites where you probably have to bit the bullet and do the touristy boat tour (which are as expected), that will allow seeing the city from the river.
