Lovely hotel and accommodation, beautiful grounds, perfect location, have read previous reviews and the drinks here are very expensive, you are limited as no bars within easy walking distance, beach BBQ extortionate, about 50 pound per person, not justified, seating area in reception not suitable for elderly as very low, music in bar area aimed at the very young, sadly, and nobody's fault the weather a big let down, very warm but only 2 days of sunshine in a fortnight, according to a local the summer really doesn't kick in till November, not a lot to do in this area if weather no good, no glass bottom boats which was one of the things we wanted to do, not sure would visit this resort again due to lack of local activities but can't fault the actual hotel, in my opinion the prices need to be looked at as this will put people of coming to this beautiful island.

Room Tip: All rooms are a walk away from amenities, but if you are mobile it doesn't matter

Thanks for leaving a comment on Trip Advisor after your recent stay with us.
We understand how upsetting it was to encounter inconveniences during your stay at the Resort and sincerely apologize for the discomfort it caused.

Our beverage prices would certainly be higher bearing in mind that we are a 4 star hotel and do charge accordingly. Beverage pricing is however frequently reviewed to ensure that we are in line with the industry in general. At the same time I must point out that we do have a very comprehensive all-inclusive package available which many guests opt for as being the best value for money alternative when travelling to a destination like Mauritius.

Our seafood prices are found to be competitive compare to what is offered in hotels of the same categories. We pay great attention to the quality of product and best value for money. We sincerely apologize if we have not met your expectations in this respect.

We are really sorry you did not find the seating area in the lobby to be suitable for elderly people as it was aim to befit the Bohemian style concept as well as the comfort of our valued guests. Nonetheless, we do have provision for our elderly guests at the Medine Bar with higher seating.

October is generally a very warm month as it is very close to the summer season which lasts from November to May. However, even though the summer months can be very hot and humid they also experience a lot of rainfall. Whereas October is a particularly dry month, which experiences only 50mm of rainfall, spread across just three days.
Furthermore, the probability that precipitation will be observed at this location varies throughout the month.

Glass Bottom boats are made available at the Boat House and require advance booking. Time of departure is affixed at the boat house itself. All sea activities as you might be aware depend on the weather and sea conditions. Nonetheless, we are trying to find out as to why you could not enjoy this particular activity.

It is always our goal to have satisfied customers and would sincerely like to have the opportunity of regaining your confidence in La Pirogue and show you the better side of the resort. Please let me know personally whenever you book as I would be more than happy to assist with any preferences you may have.

2 week all inclusive honeymoon during September 2017

Overall we really enjoyed our honeymoon, the hotel was great and the location was the easily the best along the Flic en Flac beach. As La Pirogue has no high rises, the huts are situated along the beach meaning the resort is very long. Our "hut" was situated next to Sugar Beach (sister resort), meaning we had a long walk to the main reception & pool, not an issue for us but disabled/elderly would no doubt struggle!

Pros:
- The long resort means guests are spread out along the beach, so it never felt overcrowded and could easily get a sun-lounger.
- Our package included watersports, which were very easy to book & well managed.
- The huts are small, however felt quite homely... beds were very comfy & patios were lovey to sit on.
- We could book into Sugar Beach restaurants and use their facilities (very nice resort).
- The food (bar breakfast) was always exceptional, never had a bad meal.
- The buffet was the best we've been to - somewhat smaller than other hotels we've been to in the past but every night the majority was different food with a theme (open bbq night was great!).
- The pool is large and has some character.
- The Magenta restaurant is situated around the pool and doesn't feel overcrowded due to the way it's laid out.
- The Sugar Beach Tides restaurant was excellent & in a great location!

Cons:
- We booked the honeymoon package which included a room upgrade and a dinner... although our room was on the end of the resort (meaning it was slightly more private) we did not get an upgrade. The honeymoon dinner was terrible. A pre-set meal, took 1.5 hours for the starter to arrive, mixed up our mains (took another 45 mins to arrive). We also skipped a course because it was taking so long (I think we were there from 7.30pm to 10.15pm)!!
- The pathways are quite dark at night, not a huge problem but felt under-lit in places.
- The Citronellas restaurant service wasn't great, took 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive! Food was good though, although generally slow service.
- The reception team was hit and miss. Sometimes we'd get an answer to a question instantly and other times we'd go around in circles (for example we asked how to rent a car and was told to call a number... we later found out the car rental office is on the resort.. why not just send us there?!).
- PLEASE add some more background music to the evenings. We got sick of the same few slow "jazz" remixes playing over and over.. ("My Girl" etc)!
- We felt there was not enough hotel information on arrival. Not specifically about the hotel, but more info for where we could walk to, nearby shops/things to do, bus timetables etc.
- Breakfast was always very average... cold or luke warm food.
- Don't turn the watering/sprinkler system on during peak time (10pm/11pm/12am) at night and get guests soaked, we couldn't even get into our hut without running through one (luckily we saw the funny side of it)!

Other things to mention:
- There was quite a bit of noisy building work going on in the reception area, this didn't effect us as we were far enough away not to hear the work but would have been bad if we were close.
- A special mention to Kamla & Asif who were always amazing and friendly!
- One thing we missed (not the hotels fault!) was there wasn't really much to do if the weather was poor. No nearby shops or things to do which was frustrating at times.
- This didn't effect us as we were all inclusive, but if you're going to pay for drinks then get ready to get your wallet out - they were crazy expensive. A normal bottle of wine is £30 & cocktails £12+.
- All inclusive doesn't include everything - only ones with a green star on the menu. There was loads of choice though.
- Booking at one of the restaurants (aside from the buffet) for an evening will cost you extra even on all inclusive as most items require some extra payment.
- The Tides restaurant has way more free All Inclusive options for an evening meal - not sure why Magenta was the other way around. Wish we had gone there more!
- We did a tour to Grand Basin, Black Valley & Rum Factory, including a 3 course meal at an awesome restaurant with great views.
- We also did a snorkelling trip on a catamaran with lunch.. was great although not much to see when snorkelling in the lagoon.
- We hired a Fiat 500 (6000 rupee for 2 days) which was quite expensive from ABC Car Rental at the hotel. It was good to get out and around the island to see different places. Word of warning, the driving over there is mental. Over/Under-taking, speeding etc all over the place... fine if you're a confident driver just take care!

Thank you for leaving a feedback online after your recent stay with us. I was pleased to read that you have enjoyed your holiday though certain aspect of it was not to your satisfaction.

The room upgrade for honeymooners as mentioned depends highly on the level of occupancy. We really regret we could not provide you with this service due to high occupancy during your stay at the Resort.

We would like to extend our sincere apologies for the type of service you received for your honeymoon dinner. Even though we were running at very high occupancy during your stay, there should be no excuse for a breakdown in service and I will ensure with the concerned team members that appropriate training and supervisions are implemented with our waiting staff to try and achieve perfect service at all times.

The maintenance team has been advised on the lightings along the pathways to identify possible solutions to this problem.

Your comments on the slow service at Citronellas restaurant; be assured that Sugar Beach Management team has been informed of your dissatisfaction.

We are surprised to read about the attitude of the receptionist who checked you in as staff attitude and friendliness is one of the hallmarks of our resort. It is clear that such an attitude was disconcerting for which I extend my sincere apologies. Once again if I am able to identify the persons who provided you with such a service, I will endeavor to give them appropriate corrective training advice.

Concerning the information about the Resort’s services and facilities, I would like to mention that we do provide an in room weekly Gazette where all activities and facilities are available. Furthermore, our guests can approach the guest relation team for their queries any time during their stay.

Indeed, we do have a car rental office at the resort which is found next to the Sun Boutique. We are sorry you were not provided with the right information. The concerned team has been briefed and we shall at the same time reinforce our training for the team.

The Entertainment Manager was informed of your comments concerning the music.

It is true that to maintain the lushness of our gardens it needs to be watered regularly however; it should be done in a more discreet way. We have taken note of your comments concerning the water sprinklers and have briefed the concerned team.
We do try and make sure that the all inclusive package offers a comprehensive list of beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic as well as a wide variety of food options from the 6 restaurants at La Pirogue and Sugar Beach.

Thanks again for your comments which are always useful in ensuring that we are focused on areas needing our attention. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back someday soon.

Highly recommend!! One of the best experience!
The staff is kind and professional, the food is delicious and the rooms are clean and comfortable! Every night they have different cuisine and all of them are worth to taste! The chefs are incredibly good! Cleaners do a very high standard job!!

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at La Pirogue to celebrate my wife's birthday. The hotel is beautiful being recently refurbished and sits by a wonderful beach in manicured grounds. The staff are fantastic and go out of there way to make you feel special with their great service and attention to detail. Many thanks for the bottle of fizz and invitation to the beach BBQ to celebrate the special birthday.

Our first visit since the renovations were completed. We had stayed in a refurbed room on our last visit in May, but now the public areas have finished their renovation so a chance to try those out.

Not 100% sure about the new main restaurant Wolmar set up which has now extended to include a couple more seating areas. Love the new furniture but I think I preferred the old open space in front of the restaurant instead of more seating.
But much more choice now where to sit.

Food was OK although because of my allergies and vegetarianism I chose to have something cooked to order on the two nights that the buffet was Mauritian and Indian (allergic to spices) The staff were very accommodating and a big thank you to the restaurant staff.

Great choice at breakfast as usual and good to see the sparkling wine is still on offer.

The previous reviewer stated that they had some hiccoughs at check in. Ours was smooth enough but they forgot to give us the towel card and the welcome drink seemed to be an after thought and appeared last minute after the check in formalities were completed.

Not sure if some of the front of house staff are new?

We were very pleased with our upgraded room (333) - an ocean facing detached bungalow which was airy and spacious with the most fabulous uninterrupted view of the ocean. Totally relaxing.

Comfy bed and pillows, good supply of toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, excellent lighting in both room and bathroom (so many Mauritian hotels are dimly lit) but the bathroom scales like last time still told lies and chopped a few stones off ;)

Couldn't find the BBC or any English channels on the TV though we don't watch it so no problem. The hotel TV info page however didn't work - it jumped around so you couldn't see the info.

House keeping did a great job, both morning and turndown staff.

Wi fi connectivity was fast and efficient.

We were on HB and drinks prices were in line with other 4* resorts - 505 MUR for one Phoenix beer and one palatable white house wine.

La Pirogue now also offers fine wines by the glass and offers a choice of 60 at it's Van der Stel wine bar located in the Wolmar restaurant.

You are given a price list explaining how it works.

There is now a restaurant Concierge who will book your restaurant requests located outside the main restaurant.

We managed to book Citronella for our last night but were sadly disappointed with the experience this time, unlike the previous visits. (see separate review)

Although nearly into high season there was no shortage of sunbeds and parasols on the beach, though people were busy laying towels out before breakfast, a bad practice which seems to be catching on in all Mauritius hotels sadly.

The time went too quickly as usual and we were sad to leave.
It won't be too long before our 8th visit hopefully.

Thank you for staying with us for the 7th time and for sharing your experience with us. We were pleased to note your overall rating but regret to know that some of the services offered were not to your full satisfaction.

Concerning the welcome cocktail, I would like to reassure you that we are employing new measures to enhance the service delivery and ensure that our guest receive the best of the services. The F&B team was briefed on the late arrival of your cocktail so as to avoid such occurrence in future.

We are currently working on our new timeless memories experiences and will shortly be rolling out our new beach butler service. This will avoid the need for towel cards altogether as towels will be supplied on the beach from one of our 5 beach butler stations ensuring your comfort at all times.

Indeed, we recently opened the Van Der Stel Bar, which adds a new dimension to wine tasting by offering a choice of 60 wines by the glass served from state of the art dispensers and a membership card control system. I am pleased this was well appreciated.

Your experience at the Citronella’s café was also shared with the Sugar Beach Management team for their actions.
