Attended for work. Staff seem to experience difficulty top anticipate needs for corporate events. Service slows down dramatically at times. Hotel amenities are ok, the gardens and grounds nice and the beach super, but the meals average.

Room Tip: sea or sunset views

I am obviously sorry to read that we have not entirely lived up to your expectations as far as or facilities and services are concerned. There is always room for improvement and will use your feedback to re-establish standards where necessary and re-enforcing our training so as to achieve excellent levels of service even when the hotel is at high occupancy.

It is always our goal to have satisfied customers and would sincerely like to have the opportunity of regaining your confidence in Sugar Beach Hotel and to show you the better side of the resort.

My daughter got married at Sugar Beach in November 2017, and there was a party of 20 that came and went over a 13 day period. In every respect we were made to feel welcome and many of the staff members greeted us by name (which is pretty impressive given the number of guests at the hotel at one time). As far as the wedding is concerned - it was completely stress-free and the whole day was perfect. The wedding coordinator was friendly, helpful and reassuring and the ceremony and dinner were absolutely lovely and with the stunning setting and sunset in the background it really was picture-perfect! Everything was taken care of and even though we had to place a lot of trust that things would go according to plan, there was absolutely no issue with anything and they were very accommodating. ACCOMMODATION: Guests stayed in a variety of rooms, and some did comment that their room was looking a bit tired and in need of refurbishment. We stayed in the beach front rooms which were pretty good. They were cleaned well every day and the cleaning staff were friendly and lovely. RESORT: The grounds at Sugar Beach are second to none - I have not seen nicer resort grounds anywhere. The pool and gardens are spectacular and kept spotlessly clean at all times. The sea is a bit difficult to swim in due to the coral bits everywhere (take reef shoes!) but the pool more than makes up for that.
FOOD: We really loved the breakfast buffet - it has everything you could possibly want to eat at breakfast. The dinner buffet was generally very good - some nights better than others. We went with HB because three meals a day is simply too much for us. Wine (and alcohol in general) is extremely expensive so it was an indulgence rather than a regular occurrence at dinner time! We ate at Tides one night but to be honest we found it expensive and pretty average. Service was slow to say the least. Citronellas pretty good and a nice change from buffet food. Drinking water does seem to be a bit scarce at the dinner table too - we had to ask for some all the time and often waited a long time and then they would just pour half a glass and not leave the bottle at the table (unless you paid for it) which was a little frustrating at times. Wait staff were always super-friendly and helpful.
All in all, I would highly recommend this resort to anyone. If you really want to get away from it all and not have to worry about anything - this is the place!

Room Tip: Beach facing rooms are nice. Rooms near the reception area can be quite noisy.

My wife and I stayed at Sugar Beach Golf Resort & Spa between 30/10/17 and 13/11/17 and we unreservedly recommend Sugar Beach as a family resort. This was our second visit to Mauritius and to a Sun Resort hotel. This time on the west coast at Flic en Flac. That turned out to be a good decision. We were not sure if we could better our first terrific experience at Ambre. But we did - immensely.
Our private taxi from Mauritius airport to the resort was swift and entertaining as the driver explained all sorts of things about the buildings, commercial centres, fruit trees and plants etc on the way. The weather at the airport was dismally wet – and stayed that way until we approached Flic en Flac - where it magically changed to sunshine – and stayed that way pretty much for the rest of our stay.
RESORT
The Resort is stunning. On arrival one of the special touches was the provision of a Frangipanni ladies hair flower with the welcome drink. There is a fine reception and lobby area over the main restaurant 'Mon Plaisir'. Down the curved staircase to a paved walkway, towards the sea, takes you to the main pool and the Tides restaurant. To the left of this walkway stretches a manicured lawn that fronts the distinguished Manor House. It is well worth visiting the Manor House lobby just to have a look – behind which is the big pond with flamingos, geese, ducks, black swans and other water birds. One of the pond ducks had escaped and wanders the grounds – even attending Mon Plaisir dance performances! Harmless and cute.
STAFF
In many ways the staff make the resort. All are courteous and friendly. Some are very engaging and conscientious. The special ones are hard working and very friendly.
ACCOMMODATION
The rooms, other than those within the Manor House, are on two storey small blocks that either face the sea, or are close to the shore, or face the gardens and spread the length of the resort. There are different benefits to being on ground or first floor but we chose the ground so that we could see the sea from our beach front room. Before leaving the UK I had requested that our beach front room be at the south end and was pleased for that to be confirmed when we arrived. We were personally guided to our room with our luggage delivered soon after.
The ground floor room was spacious, with two double beds, soft lighting and storage. TV was OK but rarely used. Plenty of workspace for cosmetics etc. Quiet air conditioning that worked all day and night. Blackout blinds and net curtains worked well. The bath and separate shower were a bonus - as elsewhere often only shower facilities are available - with plenty of sink space and a WC closet. Hot water immediately. The built in wardrobes and additional drawers added more useful clothes storage. Complimentary slippers, dressing gowns and nice toiletries provided. The view to the beach was splendid. The outside veranda space had two short loungers that allowed the sunset to be enjoyed.
The fridge held beer, coke, fanta, milk, water etc with tea & coffee making facilities all inclusive just in case we needed anything and there was a selection of treats to purchase as well – but we rarely needed more than was provided during the day. The room was kept spotless and neat and were were never short of the essentials. At one point even the loungers we had moved to the garden front of our room were provided extra towels. Good attention to detail.
RESTAURANTS
I had read that the Sugar Beach all inclusive dining experience was different to Ambre so contacted the Resort before booking – just to make sure how best to handle it - and was assured by their response. Much as I am sure the buffet restaurant is fine - and other guests had said so - we only visited for breakfast, or to watch dance troupe nights with traditional music. There are themed evenings as well as dance shows. Breakfast provided all you would need and the service we received was very attentive and personal. Hot tea or coffee and frequent top ups. Don't miss the fresh fruit drinks counter. The only time cheese could be found was at breakfast. However, whether continental or full breakfast the choices were covered. The layout allowed breakfast in the sun or shade, by the pool under a canopy or in a discrete quiet area.
Citronellas
Located at the north end of the resort and right on the beach. During the evenings fires are lit on the beach, some couples dine in special areas under netted canopies with soft lights and plants but mainly dining is inside or on a few outside tables – on decking or the sand. The kitchen is open for all to see. Service and food here is excellent. We much preferred here in the evenings and felt the evening menu was the best. Fine dining and attentive service. There is a waiting area for pre-dinner drinks but many arrive beach side.
Tides
Located mid resort by pool and beach with tables under umbrellas in the sand or in the open inside. We had all our lunches here and some dinners. The food here is also excellent. The lunch time menu and service was just what we needed at midday. Some lucky people also had special evening meals here – either facing the sea in the restaurant area or under a special canopy of bamboo with mood lighting, palm plants and white net. Small Bonfires are lit on the beach along by the restaurant during the evening dinners. Fine dining at lunch or dinner. Here too waiting to be seated is at the main bar so cocktails to start.!
You can buy different table wine but what we had as an inclusive selection proved difficult to beat and some were from labels we already knew.
BEACH & POOLS
Both resort pools are kept clean and we saw water testing being done early mornings. The south or 'quiet' pool had the more gentile swimmers who could laze on cushioned wooden loungers that surround it - under a selection of umbrellas using the infinity end to gaze at the sea. Beyond is a sandy area occasionally used for wedding functions etc – and now with blue bean bags and metal loungers that have recently also been fitted with padded seats – part of the continuous improvements we saw – like re-thatching the beach umbrellas and creating new plant beds. All along this part of the beach loungers were cushion fitted.
The main pool was more active with sports and exercise – and had the shallow kids pool area by the lifeguards – who we noticed were immediately on hand to help a very infirm gentleman into the pool with his elderly wife.
Stretching northwards from Tides towards Citronellas all of the beach had plenty of loungers and shades.
Unfortunately the sea here is the same as we had found previously in Mauritius – lots of coral and a few stones – making walking quite selective and careful. There are very few shells on the beach. The reef and its breaking waves could be seen during the day – sometimes large breakers – sometimes normal. In the evenings lights from those fishing could be seen. Often in early morning the sea was almost flat calm. The cool breeze was handy on most days because the sun was hot. The sea was fairly welcoming.. Beware the phantom water sprayer at the beach – although sometimes a relief. There are two towel replacement kiosks when you need them. Pool exercises daily if wanted!
Beach vendors trudge up & down selling trinkets, sarongs, beach ware etc. Some were interesting to talk with about their country. There are also stalls on some evenings in the walkway towards reception.
SPORTS
Within the sea lagoon created by the reef the water level rarely raises above waist height so water sports are quite safe. Sail boats, mini catamarans, peddle boats with canopy, wind surfing and paddle boarding were all popular – unless the wind became too much. There was a safety boat in the sports area by the beach – or in the lagoon all day.
BARS
Since we spent most of our time sunbathing by the Tides restaurant we were never short of waiter service. Later in the evening after dinner the bar at Tides provided cocktails to order.
ENTERTAINMENT
There is a small stage at Tides where on most evenings there were local singers – with mixtures of old UK hits and other music etc. Some evenings had disco possibility and there were outside stages set on the beach for DJ entertainment. Mostly though the dancers were at the buffet area, although on one occasion they played and danced from the buffet to Tides and provided a repeat performance.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Sugar Beach hosted several weddings, some small, some quite lavish. Although mostly on the manicured lawn some were held on the sand at the southern end close to our room. This did not inconvenience us and it was quite interesting to watch – from a distance.
There were also special Sugar Beach events held – mainly close to Tides. We were quite happy to concentrate on our special dinners – then retire for cocktails.
WIFI
There are WIFI electronics attached to many palm trees throughout the resort which makes access to the internet widely available – as well as in rooms and main buildings.
OTHER
There is a kids club and we saw resort staff with them on the beach one day and there are facilities for all sorts of sports like tennis, beach volleyball etc. and a Spa. We also saw several guests heading out for golf - but none of these facilities were used by us.
GENERAL
So in all a great resort. On departure another special touch was the presentation of a Sugar Beach box containing a jar of brown sugar. A thoroughly unforgettable experience.

Room Tip: Beach front sea view/beach access best. South end quiet unlesss wedding party. North end better if Citronellas choice for dinners.

Just returned from Sugar Beach following an 8 day night stay and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

The grounds are wonderful and whilst the hotel was busy it never seemed to feel that way.

We had a issue with our luggage having collected a the wrong suitcase on arrival and Vishal at reception was incredibly helpful in helping to resolve the situation.

We had some minor issues with having to wait for long periods for a high chair however all these issues were resolved very quickly after raising the issue with senior staff. A big thank you to Kevin who was very attentive and ensured we did not have to encounter any such issues again!.

Would highly recommend this resort to families with young children.

Would also like the mention the following staff members who we engaged with ok a daily basis who really made this trip both special and memorable. Janine our room cleaner made sure we had enough water for our toddler each day. Ally, Mandeo, Vimala and Manisha at the restaurant always making sure that we were okay and they were very attentive. Dharshana and Umoomesh at the Tennis Court bar were really helpful in sharing their knowledge of the country. Also a thank you to Fazle who is one of the pool/beach staff. Enjoyed talking about football on a daily basis!.

As previous reviews have suggested, it is certainly worth the additional cost of going AI versus HB. The cost of drinks is dear as you would expect and as we had a toddler who needed to be fed on a regular basis it is worth the cost!.

The food standard is okay but can be improved. Water should be provided without cost by the pool/beach.

All in all, would recommend a stay here and we have every intention to return again!.

We stayed at Sugar Beach the first two weeks of October. The beach and hotel grounds are beautiful but the rooms, in our opinion, could do with refurbishing. The food at the buffet restaurant was OK , but we have experienced better . We visited both the a' la carte restaurants several times for lunch and dinner which were very good. However, the service at Tides in the evening was extremely slow ! The choice of drinks and cocktails is excellent, but go All Inclusive as a drink costs on average £10 each !
We particularly enjoyed the "quiet pool" which was very relaxing and we were given fabulous service by "Sorab". He brought us drinks or whatever we wanted throughout the day, nothing was too much trouble . He is the best pool attendant we have ever had and a real asset to Sugar Beach Hotel. We both would like to say a special thankyou to Sorab, especially my husband Jeff.
