Chundukwa River Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 16 October 2017

The Chundukwa Lodge was the prefect place to relax at the end of a full on two week Safari trip to the the South Luangwa National Park. Located around 26 km outside Livingstone and sited right on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river, I would describe this as a boutique lodge.
With just 5 chalets built on stilts and a private cottage the lodge there are never more than 12 people at the lodge and this lodge is a wonderfull bolt hole from which to visit Livinstone and the Victoria Falls.
The Owners Doug & Gail Evans have built a beautiful lodge with well tended gardens, a series of lagoons and an attractive lodge house from which excellent meals are served.
The decor in the chalets and the main lodge is tasteful and typically African.

The staff are well trained, welcoming and always eager to please and the meals are of the highest standard.

Alison who manages the property is keen to help you plan your time to the best whilst you are at the lodge and our stay included a sun set cruise on the lodge's own motor boat, a visit to the local village and school which the lodge sponsors and a day's sightseeing to the the Victoria Falls and Livingstone.

Doug, Gail and Alison are the perfect hosts and I can't speak highly enough of this peacefully and tranquil lodge. Everthing about the lodge is top notch.

Room Tip: All Chalets are sitting right on the river with wonderful views across the Zambezi to Zimbabwe.

Thank you Alan for your review. We are so pleased to hear how much you found the lodge to be peaceful and tranquil. It certainly is wonderful and even quite therapeutic being able to immerse oneself in the natural sounds of Africa. This usually starts with the hippos honking in the early mornings or the rather unusual call of the Livingstone's Turaco perched in the riverrine forest overhead. We appreciate that for some, this might be too quiet, whilst for others a welcoming entry point to enjoy space and time in nature. The lodges boutique style decor is inspiration taken from our very colourful market places in Zambia using carefully selected Chitenge fabrics that are used to carry babies, and are worn mostly as sarongs by our women. We hope you will be back this way should you be tempted for another African Soiree. Our best wishes to you both.

Chundukwa was the perfect way to end our 10 day trip of South Africa and Zambia. None of the pictures do any justice to the peace and calm of this place. Gail, Allison and the entire staff is very welcoming and attentive to the needs of the guests. The food is fantastic...home grown veggies and home-cooked meals..added to the warmth of this lodge. Wish we could have spent more time here.
The chalets are on the river, open to the sights and sounds of the river Zambezi. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable. Allison and Gail were in touch with us almost 2 months before our arrival, keeping us informed about what activities were available and how we could best use our time. Upon arrival to the lodge, more details were shared, making the transfers, pickups, drop-offs , what to expect at the border crossings in Zimbabwe and Botswana all seem easy. Our group of nine chose to do various activities like Devil's Pool at Victoria Falls, Chobe River Safari, village visits and many more. By day we enjoyed the activities and came back to the cozy lodge in the evenings, enjoying the drinks and delicious meals. They packed picnic lunch for us, while paying careful attention to the diet restrictions and allergies. A unforgettable celebration complete with Nshima ( bush meal) was arranged the night before we left, with the staff showing us and guiding us about the customs and food preparation. It was hard to leave. Thanks Gail, Allison and the entire staff for your thoughtfulness and making our entire vacation the best ever. Pray I for one will return here someday.

Thank you Rita for bringing your lovely friends and then sharing your lovely thoughts about Chundukwa. The lodge is an ideal place for friends and family to gather and holiday together because of its intimate atmosphere. We love making people feel at home and were thrilled that we could pre-arrange all your activities according to your individual needs prior to your visit with us. Usually, we take the time sit down with each party on arrival or beforehand by email and listen to how best they want to spend their time with us. With there being so many different activities available in the Livingstone area it can be quite overwhelming. We are able to get a good sense of how to pace your stay with us so as not to feel rushed whilst still getting the most out of your time here. We for one, hope you will be back with us again. Our very best wishes to you all!

This wonderful spot offered all that we were looking for and more at the end of a fantastic three weeks in Southern Africa. Gael an Doug were charming hosts seeing that all our comforts and interests were taken care of. The food was superb and the service from Alex and Henry was first class. We had the good fortune of seeing lion on one of our inclusive sunset trips and elephant in the Park on our way to the magnificent
Victoria Falls. Riding and watching polo were additional unexpected highlights.
Cannot wait to return.

From the moment we were greeted by Alex and Alison, to the time we were farewelled by Gail and Amos, we felt like we were treated like royalty. This is such a special place. Each chalet is tucked away along the banks of The Zambezi. All superbly appointed, spotlessly clean and eco friendly. The food, service and sunset/sunrise cruises were excellent. Hopefully it won't be too long before we go back to this slice of heaven.

Room Tip: We stayed in Frankolin, which was fabulous.

Thank you, Lorraine, for sharing your experiences of Chundukwa on Tripadviser. Apart from seeing the falls, those sunset cruises are just magical with each day presenting a different light and ambience not to mention the surprise of which animals will be coming down to drink on that day. We look forward to having you back in the not too distant future. Our best regards Doug, Gail and Alison

This was our first stay at Chundukwa but hopefully not our last.

The lodge is in a beautiful setting overlooking the Zambezi. Most of the rooms are built on decks on the banks and there is an option to have the room open to the river or to close with roll down blinds.

We took most of our meals at the lodge restaurant and the food was excellent. Gail and her team went out of her way to make sure the meals were to our liking.

There were many suggestions of activities and places to go in the brochure in the room. We decided on a sunrise boat trip early one morning and also had a picnic lunch on the river bank.

One morning we booked a fishing trip and a boat came to collect us to try some fishing.

The lodge is 30 mins from Livingstone and the team can arrange for a taxi to come and pick you up to go and see the falls and spend time browsing the souvenir stalls.

On our boat trips we saw plenty of birds. The game was on the south side of the river in the Zim game park. We saw elephants in the early evening.

The level of service is very good. Our washing was done in a day so we have clean clothes for the next part of our trip.

Gail and Doug are very hands on in the lodge and are there most evenings to check on their guests and have a chat around the fire pit.

We will certainly plan another trip this way.
