The lake is highly over rated and commercialized. The lake is very huge but maintenance is ok ok. The shikaras here are very dirty and badly maintained. The place where they take you for ride is pathetic with loads of old houseboat.almost feels like you are driving through slum. I went for boating from ghat 9.

The jewel of Srinagar, Dal Lake is an enchanting sheet of water reflecting the carved wooden balconies of the houseboats and the snowy peaks of the Pir Panjal mountains.

Beautifully painted Shikara's ride is the best experience for travellers. Or, a stay in delightful houseboats is a one-time life experience for anyone. Just hire on shikaras for around 400-500 bucks and enjoy the journey.

Best time: early morning or early evening

Landmark of srinagar. Very good sikara ride. Everything is available during your ride, whole market is available there in lake.

What was once the pride of India, stretching for almost 26-28 kms, surrounded by glorious mountains, has now lost its glory and become a water body with overgrown weeds and abandoned houseboats. We took a Shikara ride and could just imaging the sparkling gem it must have been when umpteen movies were shot here. The government has put up dredging machines which are not enough for the area of the lake. I hope that steps are taken to ensure that the lake regains it’s beauty once again.

A good place to enjoy the beauty of boating & Kashmir.
- You would be disturbed a lot with the floating shopkeepers; in case you are not interested you can request the boat keeper and he can help you get rid of them.
- For group of 2-4 people one boat should be enough..
- Best time for boating is early morning or evening (sunset time)
