We spent time in Beijing and Chengdu, and Mount Qincheng was definitely the highlight of our trip. It was recommended to us by Lily of WestChinaGo, and we are so glad we decided to visit. It is definitely a climb and takes a few hours, but our 6 year old managed, and it is so worthwhile.

Be prepared for quite an uphill walk with variety of step sizes. Worth the trip to top and beautiful views and temple. Shops and food stops along the way.

Hope this can help those who are planning to go there independently (ie not with the tour).
We took metro to Xipu and train to Qingchengshan station (CNY10). From the station exit to your left and take bus 101 (CNY2) to the scenic area entrance.

From there you could walk about 15mins to the front mountain entrance or take a buggy for CNY10 (i recommend take the buggy to conserve energy for the hike).

Entrance is CNY90, if you dont need a map (which you dont), dont say yes to the counter where you buy the ticket.
I thought it was free so i said yes, it cost CNY5.

We were at Mt Emei and Leshan 2 days ago and I think Mt Emei is so much better.
The temples here are all Taoism temples and have different feel compared to the Buddhist temple.

The hike itself is easier than Mt Emei, toilets are cleaner too!

Very nice day-trip from Chengdu.
The back mountain has many waterfalls and scenic areas. It is also less crowded compared to the front mountain. The best time to visit is after summer (after rainy season), because the river will have more water and everything will be more beautiful, plus much less people than in high season (when we visited in October we were alone most of time)

How to get:
You need to take metro to Xipu station. Then take train from Chengdu (Xipu) to Qingcheng (You will need passport to buy ticket if you are a foreigner. Take return ticket in advance!) Train takes about 30 minutes. Then when you arrive to Qingcheng you need to go out of station and turn left. You will see a big parking of bus station. You need to go there to platform number 3. and take a bus to the front mountain (search 后山, or try to hear something like "hou shan" or "hou san"). Get inside the bus and take your place, once the bus is full someone will come to sell ticket. Ticket costs 25 yuan. Save it, because it is a roundtrip ticket. Bus will take you to a town, road will take 40-60 min. Once you arrive, continue to walk (in direction of bus) and you will see ticket office. Adult entrance ticket to park costs 20 yuan.

Then go through ticket controller and go straight (or just follow the crowd). At a certain point when you are in the town the road splits. You can take any. In the end you will arrive to a small square in the town and then you will have to cross a river using wooden bridge. Then you walk a little more and start your journey.

Some tips:
1. Use toilet at the ticket office or town, we did not notice any toilets on the mountain, and going into woods can be problematic (not easy to go out of the trail )
2. Take some snacks and water with you. You also can buy on the road, but prices are 2-3 times higher and not so tasty.
3. Comfortable and non slippery shoes. If you visit in autumn, take a raincoat with you it can be humid and cold on the top
4. You will need 2 yuan per person to use a boat which crosses the lake.
5. It took us 6 hours of hike in total, including stopping to take pictures and have a snack. We did not use cable cars.
6. When you finished a hike and you are back to the bottom, there are electric shuttle busses which can take you back to entrance. Price is 5 yuan.
7. Buy train ticket to Chengdu in advance, it can be problematic to buy it upon arrival, trains get full quite fast.

Lotse tower is at the top, worth the effort, even on a day that's overcast. Center for Taoism in China
