Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about your stay. We are thrilled to know how much you enjoyed your time here, since we work very hard every day to try to improve our service, so this makes us really happy.
We hope to see you again very soon!
We stayed one night at Real Plaza Hotel Suites, as American Airlines had cancelled our original return flight, due to the coronavirus pandemic (and we were now booked on the last AA flight to Miami from Guatemala). So we could only stay one night.
We were in room 105, which is a ground floor room which faced the right side of the parking lot as you faced the hotel. This was really 2 rooms, although there was no door between the rooms. There were 2 double beds, TV, 1 comfy chair, a table and chair, a water dispenser, a fireplace, and an electronic safe.
There was no fridge in the room, and when we requested ice, only a small amount was delivered.
In the bathroom there was a shower only. The sink was a very fancy tile decorated one. But even though the toilet looked new, there was a sign saying don't put paper in the toilet.
It was a long walk through the gardens to the restaurant, but the free breakfast was good, and the nachos mixtos I had for lunch was huge. There was a noisy rooster in back of the restaurant, and moderate traffic noise could be heard there, as well.
The WiFi only works in the hallways and common courtyard area. The password is on a sign at the check-in desk.
The pool was closed for repairs, but the hot tub was available, although we didn't use it. My companion did use the spa and she said it was very good, although she had to go downstairs to use it (or after using it?). She doesn't like stairs.
We requested a fire at the agreed upon time of 8:30 PM, and they built a small fire and didn't leave much wood to keep it going for a long time. But it was nice.
The parking lot is fenced, and you have to be let in by a staff member at night. But during the day, the gate is open. I should say that all the staff we saw were friendly.
I didn't notice whether they went to check the room at check-out time, as other reviewers have noted.
We would stay here again.
On our last day we went for lunch in the lovely square, Plaza Real, it was a fantastic treat and made my holiday. We found a set menu at Kane’s bottom left hand corner for just 14.50 euros!!!!!!! Fantastic service, no pushy sales, fantastic wine 4 euros a glass, for house wine, food was tasty, well presented, staff attentive but not pushy. Really, really made me a happy lady in Plaza Real, what a lovely lunch in the sun in the most beautiful setting. Also I might add a biggie for me, clean toilets too, wow. Location down from central Catalunya Square to Rambla’s on left, five minutes walk down avenue. It was beautiful
We spent a week at Hotel Real Plaza. Hindsight knowing what we know now would we stay here again? YES!! Was it perfect? No, but what property is?! I do a great deal of research on properties prior to departure as the property we stay at can be just as important as the locale we visit. Remember, though, what works well for one traveler may not work at all for another travel. We are an active couple (age 48 and 59), like to be on the go, more in to adventure than history. Based on this here are the positives and “not as positives” with our stay at Hotel Real Plaza....
Beautiful property! Loved all the gardens! Certainly didn’t feel like we were in busy Antigua when we stepped thru the doors! Felt more like a jungle or exotic garden with all the well kept vegetation. Great escape from the hustle and bustle and chaos of the city! Online photos of the property are accurate and not over stated.
We had the Royal Suite. Appreciated the extra space and ambiance of the decor. The stone and brick walls, skylight in the bathroom, iron chandelier, wooden beam ceiling, etc all created an authentic ambience. Very romantic!
The private terrace on the back was nice to have. Wish we had lounge chairs on the terrace, though, for reading, naps, etc. Numerous sitting areas in the common areas outside the rooms.
Loved having a fire in our room in the evenings when we returned. They come to your room and start the fire for you. Were told only fires after 6 pm. Not sure why? On a cold rainy afternoon a fire would be nice.
Lovely pool area with lounge chairs and a small kids pool. Also have an outdoor hot tub, but it felt luke warm at best and did not appear to have jets? There is also a small swing set near the pool. We loved the gardens and covered walk way along the stroll to the pool area. Pool closes at 6 pm. No idea why.
We liked having a free breakfast in the morning to start our day. Other reviews complain about the food, but eggs and pancakes are for the most part eggs and pancakes. We felt it was good and no complaints! We liked the food. Several choices to choose from including eggs, pancakes, toast, cereal, yogurt, fruit, etc. There were other choices on the menu, but not included in the free bkst (I.e. omelette). Not sure why, though, as they were the same menu price as other items included in the free choices??? You have to get a new voucher each day for the bkst the next morning. Kind of a hassle to remember every day. No meat options on the free bkst menu it that’s important to you.
Restaurant (open to public) was good, convenient and reasonable prices -Q250-400’s? for nachos, fajitas, etc. Only open until 4 pm, though, so not a dinner option.
Staff was very responsive prior to our arrival and during our stay. Had a number of questions during the planning phase and they were helpful and quick to respond. Few challenges during our stay with language barriers, but that’s more our problem for being lazy Americans who don’t speak Spanish. Download the google translator app to your phone and that can help.
There is no air conditioning or heat in the room. For our late Oct visit neither was needed. I did request a fan, though, and they brought it to us.
Rooms do not have safes which I inquired about prior to arrival. They arranged to have a safe in our room. They required a Q100 deposit for the safe, but returned Q’s at the end of the week. Safe was not bolted down, though, so not as safe as would have preferred.
We stayed in late Oct and rarely saw another guest. Felt very private!
Delivered 2 cokes, 2 waters and 2 beers to our room complimentary on our 1st full day. Also brought bathrobes and flip flops to our room. Not sure if this was bc of having a suite? Loved coming back to our room each nt, requesting a fire and lounging in our cozy robes.
Hotel location.....depending on your preferences the location is either a positive or not so positive. For us it was a positive! We prefer to be a bit removed from the direct city center. Too much chaos. This location was good for us. We enjoy walking and was easy to get from point A to point B. Tuk tuk (local “taxi”) is Q10 total (not per person) as long as you are going anywhere in the main grid of the city. Cheap if you don’t like to walk, returning after dark, etc..... The main “road” is just a few blocks from the back entrance of the property. This puts you extremely close to several different markets, the huge grocery store, multiple restaurants, etc. Not sure I would have any concern about the location being too far out in my opinion! All our tours picked us up at the hotel so that was a big help too.
Good WiFi in our rooms. No problems. No WiFi at pool or bkst area which would have been preferred.
Spa on site. Reservations required. Did not use their services, but noticed their prices were cheaper than other spas I’d seen advertised in Antigua.
Bed was hard as a brick. I think this is probably the first review I have ever written were I have commented on the mattress. In other words, I’m not fussy! This mattress was worth noting. MISERABLE! May be just this particular room?
Gym! I specifically asked prior to our arrival whether the property had a gym. I was told they did. Prior to arrival I asked why there were no pictures of the gym on their website and they said it was bc they were in the process of updating/adding the photos. Do not be fooled....there is no gym as you or I know it. And again, I’m not fussy. There is an outdoor area with a treadmill which hasn’t been cleaned in years (remember it’s an outdoor area) and an exercise bike that is 20+ yrs old (I know bc I used to have one just like it!). There are a few weight machines, but were all covered by tarps the first 3 days we were there. They were uncovered on Day 3 or 4 and then covered again all remaining days. There are 2 yoga mats in a bucket, but they too have been outside for a LONG time and need to be thrown away. A Trip Advisor review from 2017 mentions the noise coming from their gym very early each day from a Curves exercise class. This may be the last time this area was used! My complaint is not that they don’t have a gym. We stay at many properties w/o a gym. My complaint is holding themselves out as having a gym when what they have is some very old leftover equipment that sits outside and they call it a gym. In all fairness the equipment did all work, but don’t be expecting a typical hotel gym. This is an after thought, but could be better with some time and attention.
The gym and pool close at 6 pm. In all our travels personally and professionally we have NEVER encountered this. ??? Why would they close so early??
Website advertises free yoga class every Sun morning. We booked our Sun tour to Pacaya in the afternoon so we could attend the Sun morning yoga class. No Sun morning yoga, but front desk was not sure why. The free yoga class was one of the many reasons we chose this property. Had we known further in advance they would not have the Sun class we could have made other arrangements.
NOT SO POSITIVES
Notice I did not say negatives? Just things that could have perhaps been improved or done differently or merely things to be aware of in case they are important to you:
No fridges in the room. We like to have a small fridge for cold drinks, etc. They brought us a very small small ice bucket most days if we asked, but not the same as an ice cold coke in the afternoon or cold beer in the evening. One evening we requested ice at 5:30 pm for our drinks and was told kitchen closed. No exception. No ice after 4 pm.
There is noise from the road behind the hotel as mentioned by others. We also heard music some evenings until 10-12 pm. Not blaring, but easily heard with windows closed. Did not impede our sleep. We requested a fan and this blocked almost all noise for us.
Hot water most mornings. Luke warm water some evenings. Hit or miss. Seems to be common in our travels thru Central America? Plenty of water pressure! Not enough HOT water for a HOT tub soak, but enough bath water to have a quick soak before it turned cold!
Pool, hot tub and gym are only open until 6 pm. Disappointing. Had planned to relax by the pool after a long day of adventures or get in a workout in the evening so I could sleep in during the morning. I know many enjoy hot tubs at nt so this may be a disappointment to others as well.
Restaurant closes at 4 pm. We tried to be in by dark each evening for safety reasons AND because this time of yr it starts to pour/rain anytime between 2-4 pm and often doesn’t let up for hours! We would plan accordingly and bring dinner back to the room for later OR eat a big lunch and just small snacks back to the room for evening. Others may be disappointed no dinner options on premise?
Bkst doesn’t start until 7 am. A bit late if you are an early riser, early tours or departures. Would be nice if they opened even at 6:30 OR had an option to request the night before a to go bkst bag. Even if it’s just a bottle of water, a piece of fruit and granola bar to get you started on your day would be appreciated and an easy extra touch on their part.
The lady at the front desk most evenings needs to learn to at least smile. It’s universal no matter what country you are from!
Lighting in the bathroom is terrible particularly in the morning or on a cloudy day when there is not much natural light coming from the sky light. Doing my makeup in the morning was a challenge. I could have worse problems on vac I know! :)
Drinking water dispenser in our room was not filled most days even when we would remind them.
The best “test” of a property is as we spend our week exploring an area did we see other places which may have fit our needs better? Nope. Not here in Antigua! If we were to book this trip again knowing what we know now would we still book the same property? Yes! A few things to improve or change (i.e. remove "offers gym" from list of hotel amenities!), but we can all say the same about ourselves!
Allow extra time for check out. They go to your room and inspect. I assume they are counting towels, looking for damage to the room, etc? In all our travels around the globe this is a first for us!
I have personally enjoyed reading your review, thank you very much for taking the time to write it and share it with us! We love to know how much you enjoyed your stay. We have taken into account all of your nice critics in order to improve our service. I'd like you to know that we plan to switch the gym to another closed area with clean machines and nothing to cover them, and the yoga class is now available again, i'm terribly sorry we didn't have it during your stay, we owe you one!
Also, for the breakfast bag, we do offer this whenever guests tell us they can't stay for breakfast, it's a bag with juice, one fruit and a cookie. We'll set a nice sign at the lobby so everyone knows without asking.
Thank you again for sharing! Hope to see you soon.
lovely older hotel, not right in old town but about a 5 minute walk away. We had a room with 3 beds, unfortunately for us, the room was roadside. Even though the hotel is set back quite a ways from the road, if you are a light sleeper, the road noise starts around 6 a.m. Definitely ask for a room in the back. The door to the hotel is locked, so they have to buzz you in. Not a problem, as they usually see you coming since the lobby is right there. However one night, we returned around 10 pm and nobody was there. We banged on the door, rang the bell, kicked the door, banged the glass for over 5 minutes before the guy appeared from the back of the hotel. Also they lock the main gate at night too, and you have to buzz to get in. Not sure if this is a common problem, but could be very maddening if the guy isn't watching. The room was huge and clean. The water pressure really good with lots of hot water, although the shower took a long time to drain. Room could have used portable fans, as there is no AC, even though it wasn't really hot, but we were there in March. The wifi worked only in the front room of our rental, and there is no wifi in the restaurant or pool area which are beside each other. Perhaps the hotel needs to improve this. The breakfast was very good, as you order off the menu. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking is fenced in.
Read article about room robbery before booking.

TripAdvisor is a platform designed to share reviews on past stays in hotels, that is, share your own experience. It is a pity that it is used to disclose erroneous information about our property. That case is being handled by the police since a formal complaint was made and we are in the process of clarification, it has not been confirmed that the loss of the money of that man was stolen from our property.
