My husband and I stayed at Hideaway resort Fiji for 10 days from the 8-18th of November. We had a lovely waterfront bure however it was a long walk from the resort facilities. It was peaceful though with a beautiful view of the ocean. We were greeted by someone beating the drum and given a welcome drink. The drum is also used to farewell guests. Everyone one is very welcoming everyday. They all have beautiful smiles and friendly faces. After looking at the menus on our first night we were disappointed with the selection of food and the price. It was mostly food we would normally eat and quite expensive. We had breakfast included so we tried to have breakfast late and fill up on it to last till dinner. We tried to choose mostly entree meals however a few times we were given mains instead without knowing. There was a Lovo Fiji buffet feast on one night of the week. This was very good. After tasting the Fijian dishes I could see why they don't have a lot of Fiji dishes on the menu. Some are a required taste. There is a fish in lime juice on the menu every day which is very nice. The main is huge. The entree is a perfect size if you don't have a huge appetite. There isn't much choice in restaurants. The food isn't of great quality. There is a quick bite outlet by the pool however it shuts at 5pm which is far to early. They have subs, wraps and chips for a reasonable price. The sub buns aren't very nice. The fillings are tasty though. I didn't try the wraps.
Unfortunately we arrived late the first night and weren't given much information about the resort or encouraged to go to an orientation the next day. This information was on a small fact sheet that was inside a card they gave us however I didn't really notice it. There is a daily activities sheet that comes to your room. It was on that sheet also however I didn't notice it until about 5 days later. This was unfortunate because the resort is a fair way from anywhere and no one really tells you anything about where you can go. We discovered Rosie's tour desk however they don't tell you how to catch a bus to a small town Sigatoka. Sigatoka is half an hour away by bus and has quite a few good little shops for souvenirs. It costs $3.80 fjd for two adults on one bus company and $4.30fjd on another company. Much better than the $70 return by taxi the resort tells you about or the $50 return the taxi drivers across the road from the resort offer you. There is a little arcade with handicrafts for sale at the resort. One older lady in this arcade was very helpful. That's how we found out about the bus to Sigatoka. These buses run every half hour.
The resort has lots of things to do on their activities list each day. Happy Hour is between 6pm and 7pm. They only have four cocktails on special for happy hour. They're not half price though. Only $2 off and pretty much the same price as at home. The beer is also about $2 off. Some people had yellow arm bands which meant they had all meals included plus drinks. Cocktails were half price to these people. They had to buy their own alcohol after 10pm though. We were offered this deal for an extra $1,600. We didn't take it up because we had already spent enough on accommodation and flights. We found out that most people with yellow armbands had booked six months in advance. Apparently if you do this it is a much cheaper deal. I guess those who book after the six months pay a higher rate like we did and basically supplement for the ones who paid the cheap deal.
There is only one pool and it is quite small for a resort. There are no areas in the pool to get away on your own like at other resorts. The resort itself is presented well and is well maintained. The gardens are lovely and there are hammocks to laze around in under the palm trees. There's plenty of entertainment everynight including a disco that starts at 10pm.
Our Bure was beautiful. It had a king bed, a sofa, air con, fan, tea/coffee, nice bathroom plus a nice open air bathroom as well which looked up at the palm trees. The mattress on our bed was quite hard. They put a topper on it for us which made some improvement. The pillows were ok. Housekeeping kept putting flannelette sheets and pillow cases on our bed which was really uncomfortable in such a humid climate. Sometimes there was pilling of the fabric on the sheets which was even more comfortable. We had to ask not to have flannelette sheets. Other than that they did a great job keeping the room nice for us.
The beach was nice. You need to take reef shoes though because there's lots of broken coral on the beach and under the water. It's not very deep because there is a coral reef not far out. There's some good waves out there at times. When you walk through the water you can see fish swimming around you. There were also several blue starfish under the water.
The highlight was a cruise on a yacht called the Whale's Tale. It cost $199 fjd per person. You leave at 7.30am and return at 7.30pm. There is morning tea, drinks, water, beer wine and champagne plus a fabulous buffet lunch on a small island called schooner island. The trip to the island was breathtaking. We have the best seats on the top of the yacht. It was so beautiful, peaceful and serene. The crew were very attentative and friendly with beaming smiles. One crew member remembered every passengers name.
I was sick on three occasions with chills and fevers after going from extreme heat to cold air conditioning in shops and bus so be aware of that. We also bought a bottle of Fijian Vodka called Cearina. Steer clear of this. It tastes and smells like metho. Will add photo.

There is also a massage cottage just a few minutes down the road on the beach. $50 fjd per hour. The resort sometimes does a special on a massage for $50 for 50 minutes.More
