Owner description: The Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM), opened at Murray House in Stanley in 2005, is a vibrant, cultural institution dedicated to preserving, collecting and displaying objects that tell the story about trade and maritime in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta. Since 2013, the Museum has been relocated to the picturesque Victoria Harbour at Central Pier No. 8. An independent, non-profit registered charity, HKMM is supported by the shipping industry, the business community, private individuals and the Hong Kong SAR Government. HKMM houses 15 galleries including a venue space for special exhibitions and events, a resource centre, a roof-top social enterprise café, and a gift shop. HKMM promotes Hong Kong, China and Asia's maritime history and heritage as well as the vital role that ships and the sea play in our past, present and future. It also offers visitors a variety of public programmes including guided tours, workshops, public talks, and school, community and family activities.

Visited the museum on our visit to Hong Kong and thoroughly enjoyed the museum. It is very well laid out and the exhibits all have information to advise. We were lucky enough to have access to the ships simulator, which is usually closed on the day we visited. The staff member was waiting for students to arrive and saw we were looking and asked if we would like to come in. It was a fantastic experience and really made our visit memorable.

We had been to a number of museums in HK during our trip and had a bit of spare time while wandering the star ferry terminal at Central, so decided to go into the maritime museum.

The museum was an eye-opener, did not realise the importance of the harbour to HK from pre-Ming times to the mid 1960s.

The exhibition on the shipping containers is amazing. You need to platy the game of filling a ship with containers, looks easy, but I sunk 5 ships - good fun.

Definitely worth a visit.

Well worth a visit with lots of interesting and educational exhibitions. Try loading containers onto a ship. It is more difficult than it looks. Interesting case study of the Rich Harvest incident off Drake Island.

Admission included in our Big Bus Tour & it was worthwhile spending time there. Excellent displays, views over the harbour & interactive models. Nice cafe as well.

This museum is sited in a mock-up of the old Star Ferry piers, very convenient for the ferry across the harbour. I always associate Maritime museums with just rows of models of ships, but this is much more interesting than that. There was an unusual temporary exhibition of photos of Hong Kong taken in the 1940s and '50s by a Chinese ex-sailor who became an ice-cream salesman selling from a bicycle. The permanent displays cover all aspects of the sea and ships, with a good emphasis on the environment. A good way to spend an hour or two, especially if the weather is inclement.
