We took the Metro from East Tsim Sha Tsui to Tung Chung. Cost was HK$19.5 (Equivalent £1.95) single and the service was clean, fast and reliable. There are lots of staff around to help if you need it but the sineage is excellent. An interesting journey out through Hong Kong across to Lantau Island. The Ngong Ping Cable Car opens at 10.00am and costs HK$210 each (Equivalent £21) return. We had a fantastic 5.7km trip with excellent views of the harbour, airport and as we reached the top, the Big Buddha itself.
We also saw the Po Lin Monastery nestling in the forest before we reached the terminus. There are lots and lots of tourist shops and cafes which was somewhat unexpected but we then climbed the 268 steps up to the 34m Buddha. It is magnificent and has some interesting exhibits about its construction inside. After descending the steps we visited the Po Lin Monastery – excellent architecture and culture and plenty of incense. Highly recommended as a day out, the weather for us wasn’t particularly good but it didn’t matter!
TOP TIP – Get to Lantau as close to 10.00am as possible, it gets horrendously busy later in the day.

After getting on the cable car, the views are amazing, just take your time to wander around this little island and visit the Big Buddah, take a leisurely stroll around the grounds and stop at the various shops for a browse or purchase, stop and have a break at many of the restaurants or coffee shops around too..

We took the Ngong Ping 360 cable car with the crystal bottom. The ride to Lantau island is around 25 to 30 minutes. The view from the cable car is gorgeous. As you reach the top, one can see the Big Buddha from the cable car. Once you are dropped at the island, it’s a 10 minute walk to the monasteries. That’s where we went first. After a vegetarian lunch at the monastery, we took a bus up to the Big Buddha. Many people climb the 250 odd steps as well. Once there, you can see the museum (save your lunch coupon/receipt) for entry, from the museum you can climb right at the top of the statue.
We also visited the Tai O fishing village and took a boat around. A village on stilts, this is famous for its fishing culture and seafood (though we didn’t try anything here).
All in all, a day absolutely well spent.

You can reach this via MTR. It is the island where the Airport is. Enjoy 360 degrees view via the Cable Car.

Plan on going to Lantau to have lunch at one of the few local fish restaurants. The boat ride over is very pleasant however check the return schedule carefully.
