OK, on the one hand this is just a pedestrianised shopping area but, on the other, it is a lovely, well-preserved historic street. We loved it and, staying just around the corner, enjoyed wandering here with the locals in the evenings. It's a bit touristy, and there is an old tram that you can ride up and down, but it's a fascinating place nonetheless. If you step into the parallel street on the right (walking down) you are in real traditional Beijing. Equally, to the left the streets have been revitalised with restaurants, galleries etc. To get here take subway line 2 to Qianmen.
