I have lived in Beijing for a few years, and have had all of my immediate family visit. My father and brother made the trip during the Christmas vacation in 2012, and they stayed in the Jinma hotel since my apartment was across the street. It was extremely convenient to be able to walk across the street and meet them, and the hotel was pretty nice compared to others I had looked at in the area. They had a simple two-bed room, which was kept very clean. If this is the area where you'd like to stay during your Beijing visit, I'd recommend this hotel. There is a Starbucks downstairs and a few other shops and restaurants in the area. The staff didn't speak much English, but it didn't pose a big problem for us as I speak Chinese fairly well. However, if you have the option to stay anywhere in Beijing, I wouldn't highly recommend this area. Living here, I have visited many places, and this is one of the least desirable to visit as a tourist. You will need to take a taxi or a bus (the subway is not nearby, though it is currently being built) to any main locations. You can expect to spend about 20-50 RMB to any main tourist attractions within the city, and at least 70 RMB to the airport. It is not a terrible location, but there are much better places to stay in the city.
