People told me the Accor Group has plans to renovate this hotel, adjacent to the very nice Pullman hotel. Before those renovations will take place, don't expect any comfort. Staff is very friendly overall. The hotel is very safe and gives guests the opportunity to use the facilities of the Pullman (e.g. bars, pool, breakfast area)
Cheap option if you just need a safe place to sleep. The room I was in looked overused. Bathroom was still kind of clean but looked so old and used. Ask for a renovate room. Friends told me they have some. Go to the Pullman for a better breakfast. Breakfast in the Grand is very basic.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room on the highest available floor

The best feature of this hotel is that it's shared with it's richer younger brother, the Pullman Hotel.

The Grand Hotel is the older brother who may have been attractive in younger days but is now overweight and unattractive. There's usually only one person on the front desk. Sandra was quite helpful, but clearly over-worked. Checking in or out or asking for something may take a while. There's peeling paint, black mould and other signs of disrepair in the lobby. Take an elevator to your room and you'll fight with the elevator doors, the key reader in the elevator, and (in the case of my colleague) potentially an unscheduled 20-minute stay in the elevator. Apparently elevator malfunctions are so commonplace the lobby staff don't bother putting a sign on the elevators that are acting up. Taking the stairs (if you're on a lower floor) is an interesting journey into the bowels of the hotel with many dead ends and grubby hallways. Arrive at your floor as I did this evening and there were 4 young people just hanging out in the hallway. sitting on a table in front of the elevators. for 15 minutes. In fact, in general there are a lot of people just hanging around this hotel and it's not always clear why. Open the room door with the card reader and the entire door handle and card reader rotates around in my hand as I turn the handle. The door needs a good heave to open and later to ensure it's latched and closed. In the room, the fridge has a bright light that shines through the glass door. Although the light works, the fridge does not. Nor does the safe for valuables (it's locked shut). Nor does the closet sliding door. The towel rail is handing off the wall. The air conditioning seems to be stuck on the same temperature, no matter what you do to the thermostat. The desk does not have any power outlets nearby, so you have to run an extension cord from an outlet next to the bed. The furniture is funky and very artsy. The TV gets about 25 channels but not in HighDef. The WiFi is free, but you have to get a code from the front desk that lasts only 4 hours. And the WiFi is constantly disconnecting and re-connecting.

I did say that the best feature is it's younger brother, the Pullman. Walk down a long frumpy corridor from the Grand Hotel lobby and you'll reach the Pullman lobby. Spotlessly clean, shiny, modern decor. A wonderful pool with several different poolside eateries. A well-equipped gym, and adjacent squash and tennis courts. It's a night and day difference between the two hotels. The restaurants are all very good - The pizzas are made in a wood-fired oven.

Unfortunately, all that luxury comes at a price. But $25 for a hamburger! $27 for a buffet breakfast! More than $20 to wash two pairs of underwear and one golf shirt. This is unfortunately typical pricing for luxury hotels in KInshasa.

Room Tip: upper rooms have nicer views but then there's those creaky elevators....

I was not expecting much, but from check-in which was reasonably efficient, the room which was good and a great pool area to unwind and have a drink after a day of work was all good. What did need improvement was the breakfast selection.

Situated a 2 hours taxi drive through the city - from the airport to the hotel - I ended with begging the taxi driver for a receipt. Entering the hotel, I was helped by a friendly reception. Be aware, all prices are to be paid in USD. Finally arrived in my room, spacey and outmoded. It needs renovations but all is acceptable!

The hotel itself is build on the back of the Pullman Hotel, an excellent modern hotel. The room price differs just some 30USD.

You have two choices for breakfast, the Grand Hotel's own breakfast area or walk into the breakfast area of the Pullman hotel - looking onto the pool area in an air conditioned area - avoiding the mosquitos ;)
