It s a strange sensation driving below sea level. You need to stop for the photo and a play with the camel if they are there!

On a tour bus to the Dead Sea our bus stopped here. Nothing much to see here except this sign and a hand sculpture. You can ride a camel for a fee if you'd like.

Actually, the “Sea Level” sign designates the level of the Mediterranean Sea, if a tunnel opened under Israel connecting the Mediterranean to the Dead Sea. After five fabulous days in Jerusalem the week of Christmas, our Overseas Adventure Travel tour group was en route to the Dead Sea. “We’re approaching sea level,” the tour guide said. Necks were craning trying to find what we thought was the Dead Sea, which is 1,410 feet below established sea level, the lowest place on earth outside of caverns.

Nope! We saw only arid desert, a camel ($8 for a 3-minute ride), and what appeared to be fog much lower and in the distance. THAT was the Dead Sea. There is ample space to park, but recommended time should be less than 15 minutes. This is a photo op. One thing that may be of interest is the sculpture that somewhat resembles a hand, just beyond the parking area. I couldn’t find anything on the Web that defines this sculpture depicted in the accompanying photo.

Stopping at sea level take a photo with a camel and the sign before continuing to the lowest place on earth. Pretty cool place to show off to your friends back home

This is a fun marker to denote sea level - and since you're travelling down from the mountains, you can definitely feel your ears popping. We had a lot of fun checking our altitude in a number of locations using the app on our phone.
