It's hard to travel to or live in Saigon without hearing about AnAn via word of mouth or internet fandom. The restaurant has an almost mythical status. We held off going to AnAn for a while given how expensive it is, but we finally caved in and had dinner there this week for a special occasion.
There was nothing that was bad about the restaurant, but it just wasn't what we were expecting given all the hype and great reviews. The service was just okay and we felt very rushed by the staff to order and get the heck out of our table as soon as possible (fair enough, they've got a small space and need to fit in as many people as they can). Service usually isn't amazing in Saigon in general (em ơi!), but one would expect better service at a top restaurant geared for tourists.
Our food came out very quickly, so it was hard to have a chance to really "enjoy" the meal. Food-wise, nothing was bad, but it wasn't anything to remember forever. "Street food fusion" sums up the cuisine pretty well, and there's lots of variety on the menu. The menu (and cost) is definitely geared towards tourists who are probably more wiling to spend money for the experience. We joked that the restaurant should be called "MắcMắc" or Expensive Expensive (although that might just be southern Vietnamese; I've heard other words for expensive...).
We can say that the bar was quite good. We enjoyed the pitcher sharing cocktails which were probably the best deal on the menu, and they have some fun, unique cocktails on the menu. The roof top bar is fun, but very small, so be warned when the server inevitably tries to get you out of your table and up to the rooftop bar only to find that it's full (we were lucky, but we felt bad for taking the last seats when there was a whole crowd of people coming up the stairs just behind us).
We feel that AnAn was probably really awesome and more enjoyable when it first arrived in the Saigon restaurant scene, but now it just seems very commercialized and living off its fame. AnAn knows they will fill tables every night, but sadly, we don't plan on going back. If you are visiting Saigon and don't mind spending some money, you should try it (be sure to get a reservation) as many others have enjoyed it.
